Maguire: Fine margins went against us

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire was clearly disappointed after a largely positive display against Paris Saint-Germain ended in defeat.

The UEFA Champions League clash at Old Trafford ended 3-1 to the visitors, but the teams went into the break level at 1-1 after Neymar and Marcus Rashford both scored in the first half.

After the interval, United dominated the play and missed several big chances. Against the run of play, Marquinhos put PSG in front before Neymar once again got on the scoresheet in injury time, just when the Reds had been going all out for another equaliser.

The Reds have work to do to qualify from Group H, after a frustrating night at Old Trafford.

Maguire was understandably dismayed when he faced the media after the match.

"It's a disappointing night,” our defender told BT Sport.

“We went into the game wanting to win the game, to win the group. It was a game of fine margins. We had the better chances on the night and I have got to say their goals are scrappy goals, with ricochets and pin-ball around the box before it falls to them and it gets stuck in the back of the net.

“We come away with nothing from the game, when I feel we deserve something from it.”
After PSG’s second goal, Fred got sent off for a second yellow card following a tackle on Ander Herrera, in which he looked to have won the ball first. Rashford then had to withdraw through injury.

"It all happened quickly,” the captain reflected.

“You know, football is a game of fine margins. You have got to take your chances and don't give them goals, soft goals. Like I said, the goals we conceded tonight, the first two, are scrappy goals. It's not that they opened us up with the talent that they've got in their team, we know the talent they've got in their team, so I felt, on a whole, we deserved something from the game.

“It's disappointing but we have got to pick ourselves up, we have got a big game on Saturday," he added, referring to our trip to West Ham.

As for the Champions League, United need a point against RB Leipzig at the Red Bull Arena to ensure qualification into the round of 16.

"We want to stay in control and go through to the knockout stages," said Maguire. "We have to make sure we go to Leipzig and win the game.

“We performed well here at Old Trafford against them and we can go to Leipzig full of confidence. I'll pick the lads up and I'm sure the gaffer will as well.

“Ultimately, we fell short tonight - playing for Manchester United, it's not good enough to be beaten on your own patch. We're disappointed for sure but we have got to take the positives. We can take plenty of positives out of tonight.”
