Champions League: How United's group looks now

Tuesday 24 November 2020 23:20

Manchester United are in pole position to go through in the UEFA Champions League after the Reds beat Istanbul Basaksehir 4-1 at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sit top of Group H with nine points after two goals from Bruno Fernandes, a Marcus Rashford penalty and a late Daniel James finish secured our third win. Deniz Turuc scored a consolation goal for the visitors, from a free-kick in the second half.

In the other game on Tuesday evening, Neymar secured a home victory for Paris Saint-Germain, scoring from the spot as they overcame RB Leipzig 1-0. Both of those sides now have six points and are three points behind the Reds before the fifth matchday.

The Reds rack up another big home win in the Champions League, largely thanks to a brilliant first half.

United now only need a draw from one of the final two games to seal a place in the knock-out rounds of the competition. That is because it is the head-to-head record that counts over goal difference in the Champions League.

As Ole’s side have beaten both RB Leipzig and PSG in the group stage already, one point will be enough to go through to the final 16. Istanbul Basaksehir are bottom of the group on three points and cannot overtake the Reds even if United lose the last two and the Turkish side win both of theirs.

"We need one more point to go through, but of course we want to be top of the group," Ole told BT Sport after Tuesday's triumph.

"That’s our aim, but we’ll take one game at a time and now it’s PSG coming here so we’re looking forward to that one."

We welcome the Parisiens to the Theatre of Dreams on Wednesday 2 December with kick-off at 20:00 GMT. Our final game of the group stage, six days later, will be in Germany at the Red Bull Arena.
