Revealed: United's Man of the Match

Sunday 24 January 2021 20:35

Marcus Rashford was crowned Manchester United's Man of the Match following Sunday's superb 3-2 win over Liverpool.

Almost two-fifths of the fans voting in our Official App felt the no.10 merited the accolade, after an energetic display in which he frequently drove at the visitors' makeshift defence and posed all sorts of problems for their young centre-back Rhys Williams in particular, as he cut inside from the left wing.

Rashford restored United's lead in the game just three minutes after half-time when he fired past Alisson Becker - his fourth goal in as many Old Trafford meetings with the Merseysiders - but he also received huge plaudits for the crossfield pass that created Mason Greenwood's first-half equaliser.

In our full-time poll, the Wythenshawe-born forward received 39 per cent of the vote, almost double the amount achieved by his nearest challenger Paul Pogba on 20 per cent. The Frenchman was, of course, voted Man of the Match in the midweek Premier League win at Fulham.

The only other player with a percentage in double figures against Liverpool was Bruno Fernandes, on 17 per cent, after coming off the bench to win a thrilling tie for United with a fantastic free-kick.

It's the first time this month that Rashford has been declared the star performer in a particular game, after winning the award twice in December for the victories over Sheffield United away and Wolves at home.

MAN OF THE MATCH: THE TOP FOUR

Marcus Rashford (39 per cent)
Paul Pogba (20 per cent)
Bruno Fernandes (17 per cent)
Luke Shaw (8 per cent)

Congratulations, Marcus - and thanks to everyone who voted in our Official App.
