Wan-Bissaka: I want to top Premier League charts

Saturday 07 March 2020 06:00

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has revealed that one burning personal ambition for the remainder of the season is to finish top of the Premier League's tackling charts.

After joining from Crystal Palace last summer, the right-back began life at United in sensational form, making 15 tackles in his first two games against Chelsea and Wolves to top the domestic stats.

The Croydon-born defender is still riding high in the Premier League's charts with 10 fixtures to play, but is now in second place behind Leicester City's Portuguese full-back Ricardo Pereira.
Wan-Bissaka was Man of the Match during the last league derby against Manchester City.
Ahead of this weekend's crunch Manchester derby, Wan-Bissaka spoke to the club's official matchday programme United Review and was asked for his opinion on the tackling table.

"I think I’m second at the moment, and I’m happy with that for now, just to be right up there," replied the 22-year-old. "First place is the target by the end of the season!

"It’s going in the direction that I want it to go. I’m working hard and improving my game all of the time, and I just want to continue doing that."
Wan-Bissaka has made an incredible 91 league tackles so far this term, with only Pereira's mammoth 117 outgunning him at the moment. The United player has, however, made a full two fewer appearances than the Leicester man.

But, from a collective perspective, the former Crystal Palace favourite is happy with the progress being made by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men, who are on our longest unbeaten run of the season (nine games) heading into Sunday's derby.

"I think we’re in a better position than when I joined," said Aaron. "We didn’t start off great at first, not as the club is expected to do, so I think we’re moving in the right direction now. I’m very excited by the future. I think we’re getting closer to reaching our target.

"I came to this club to win trophies and I know that this team is capable of winning trophies. I think it’s a process. We’re going in the right direction and that’s what we’re aiming for."

While the fourth Manchester derby of the season is all about gaining league points and pushing for a top-four place, the Reds still harbour hopes of silverware in both the Emirates FA Cup and the Europa League, where we have reached the quarter-finals and the last 16, respectively.

And Wan-Bissaka believes claiming some silverware in his – and Solskjaer's – first full season could be an important milestone for the Norwegian's developing team.

"I think that will help a lot, getting our hands on the first trophy," he admitted. "It will boost our confidence and help us go on to the next [one]. That’s how Ole wants us to think: he wants us to get our first trophy, move on to the next one and just keep going for others."
