Revealed: United’s Man of the Match v Basaksehir

Tuesday 24 November 2020 23:38

Bruno Fernandes was once again voted Man of the Match after scoring two goals to steer Manchester United towards a convincing win in the UEFA Champions League.

Our no. 18 picked up over two thirds of the votes - 68 per cent to be exact - from the users of our Official App.

Another midfielder also stood out for our supporters. Donny van de Beek, playing in a slightly deeper role, impressed with his control in midfield and strong tackles to win 20 per cent of the fans' votes on Tuesday night.

In joint-third place, with three per cent each, we find Edinson Cavani, on his first United start, and Alex Telles, who is really finding his feet at Old Trafford. The Brazilian whipped in several good set-pieces and was always willing to attack down the left.

Despite becoming the fastest Reds midfielder ever to 20 goals, Fernandes still thinks he can do better...

Fernandes got the Reds off to a flying start against Basaksehir. On the half-volley following a corner, the Portuguese playmaker rifled United into the lead with an emphatic strike. The wonder goal was his 20th for the club and no United midfielder has previously reached that landmark so quickly. It only took him 35 appearances to achieve the feat.

Bruno then followed up his seventh-minute opener when he tapped in a loose ball after a mistake by Basakesehir goalkeeper Mert Gunok. After letting Marcus Rashford take the penalty to send United 3-0 up, Fernandes was substituted and got a well-deserved rest just before the hour mark.

This is the fifth time in ten United matches this season, and third time in a row, that Fernandes has been named Man of the Match. No other player has topped the poll more than once.
