Revealed: United on best away run since 1999

Wednesday 30 September 2020 14:58

Manchester United’s Carabao Cup win at Brighton & Hove Albion means we’ve now gone unbeaten in 16 away matches in all competitions – our longest such run since 1999.

Since the 2-0 Premier League reverse at Liverpool in January, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have won 13 and drawn three of our matches on the road, excluding the FA Cup and Europa League semi-final defeats to Chelsea and Sevilla respectively which, of course, took place on neutral grounds.

Our second victory at the Amex in the space of five days ensures the current United side have overtaken Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2000 vintage, who went 15 games without defeat away from home between February and September of that year.

Although Ole’s Reds have now matched the Busby Babes’ sequence – notched up between February and October 1956, across two title-winning seasons – there’s still some work to do before two of the club’s all-time-great sides are surpassed.

United haven't lost an away game since Bruno Fernandes's arrival, in January.

A League Cup defeat to Stoke City in September 1993 was United’s last away from home for over six months, before a 2-0 reverse at Blackburn in April 1994 – in that time, Ferguson’s champions went 20 without losing at home and in Europe!

But the club record stands at 21 and began in our unbelievable Treble-winning season.

After being knocked out of the League Cup at Tottenham in December 1998, United embarked on a stunning unbeaten away run, which took in wins at Arsenal, Chelsea and Juventus, as well as an 8-1 shellacking of Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

By the time Chelsea beat the Reds 5-0 at Stamford Bridge, in October 1999, it had been an incredible 305 days since a side was able to celebrate a victory over United in front of their home support.

Will Solskjaer’s side overtake that mark of 21? We are scheduled to visit Newcastle, Everton, Southampton and West Ham in the Premier League between now and 5 December, with a further three away Champions League games guaranteed before 9 December.
