Youngsters set for Celtic friendly

Manchester United’s Under-18s have a prestigious friendly on Saturday, when facing Celtic to kick off the SuperCup:NI tournament in Northern Ireland.

The game starts at 17:00 BST and is the latest part of the pre-season preparation for the boys, who have been away in Austria at a training camp, with the possibility of a couple of older players who have just moved into the Under-23s also being involved.

Last year, the Reds played in a similar fixture, beating Northern Ireland 1-0 thanks to a goal by Nishan Burkart. Midfielder Ethan Galbraith missed the match in his homeland in 2017 but is relishing the prospect of turning out for the Reds, following a stunning end to last season.

“It’s very special for me, coming from Belfast, to be playing for Manchester United,” he told MUTV. “It’s unbelievable. I’m looking forward to it as, last year, I didn’t get to play due to international clearance not being available.

”So I wasn’t allowed to play but I’m really looking forward to being in front of a home crowd. It’s a big game and, obviously, Celtic have a lot of supporters in Belfast as well so there should be a huge crowd at the match.

”I didn’t want last season to end," he admitted. "I wanted to keep going and going. But I can build on it and hopefully do the same things this season. Being a second-year, I’ll look to push on.

”It’s about being in with a new group but half the team is still from last year. We’re bringing in the new boys and hopefully will do well. I think the team’s very strong. We had a very strong side last season too but I think we can build on that this year.”

Celtic look set to field an Under-19s team at Coleraine Showgrounds before the main tournament gets under way next week with United entering a team in the junior section of the event.
