Team news update for Newcastle encounter

Friday 16 October 2020 09:50

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says captain Harry Maguire is a doubt for Saturday's return to Premier League action at Newcastle United.

The centre-back was sent off in England's UEFA Nations League defeat to Denmark but sustained a knock before then and must be assessed before making the trip to Tyneside.

It also appears as though Facundo Pellistri will not be involved while Alex Telles is resting following a flight back from South America, following his participation in the World Cup qualifiers.

"Harry seemed to pick up a little knock just before he got sent off," revealed Ole to MUTV's Mark Sullivan in our pre-match interview. "So we’re having a look at him today to see how he is.

“You never know [how players are injury wise] until they get back and we have had a look at them. I think, and we hope, everyone has come through okay. Of course, Alex has travelled all round the world. He flew overnight and got here on Thursday. ”

Pellistri, meanwhile, has been training with the first-team squad but is clearly being viewed as one for the future.

"He’s a young boy coming from Uruguay," explained the boss. "It’s the tradition we have here where we want to bring young players in and let them grow and develop and become the player they can be.

“Of course we’ll give him time. He’s more one for the future than now, but he’s exciting and he’s shown some things in training that we don’t really have here. I’m looking forward to helping him develop and helping him settle.”

Axel Tuanzebe has been stepping up his recovery from injury while there is no fresh update on fellow defender Phil Jones. Edinson Cavani (quarantine) and Anthony Martial (suspension) are both unavailable for the St James' Park encounter.

NEWS FROM NEWCASTLE

Magpies boss Steve Bruce has been boosted by a raft of players returning to training. Ciaran Clark, Paul Dummett, Jamal Lascelles and Matty Longstaff, who scored in both home-and-away fixtures between the clubs last term, should be available. Jamal Lewis and Miguel Almiron were doubts after problems on international duty but could now be fit in time.

There is a question mark over Sean Longstaff's involvement, while Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie are definitely sidelined. Martin Dubravka has reportedly suffered a setback so it seems certain in-form Karl Darlow will continue in goal.

Danger man Allan Saint-Maximin signed a fresh six-year contract this week to commit his future to the Tynesiders.
