Marcus Rashford and his team-mates.

United are the nutmeg kings but who's done the most?

Friday 05 June 2020 08:30

Back in March, there was a suggestion in some quarters that Manchester United players had made the most nutmegs this season, when compared to all the other teams in major European leagues.

An earlier report by Talksport, in February, suggested Tottenham were ahead of the Reds in the Premier League table for performing the trick but the latest data, compiled by website FBREF.com, shows the Reds have overtaken Jose Mourinho's men, with 32 compared to 30.

Furthermore, Marcus Rashford is the king of the nutmegs at United, having done nine this term in the division, four more than any of his colleagues and, indeed, a figure bettered by only one player throughout the league.

The Reds - and Marcus Rashford in particular - are great at nutmegs, as you can see in our video...

England international Rashford has long shown off the silky skills he honed in the club's Academy, and he has proved a constant nightmare for defenders, ever since breaking into the first team. One run, against Brighton & Hove Albion, was particularly jaw dropping and he is proving to be one of the most entertaining performers in the country.

As he is training again after a back injury, hopefully he will be available when Premier League action resumes in mid-June.

The man who comes out top of the individual table is Wolves forward Diogo Jota. The Portugal international was the first player to hit double figures and is one ahead of Marcus, with Tottenham duo Dele Alli and Serge Aurier in joint-third place on seven.

Rashford has dribbled past defenders 71 times this term, with Anthony Martial (57) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (56), his closest challengers in this regard, from a United perspective.

Most nutmegs (Premier League):
10 - Diogo Jota (Wolves)
9 - Marcus Rashford (United)
7 - Dele Alli, Serge Aurier (Tottenham)
6 - James Maddison (Leicester), Dwight McNeil (Burnley), Teemu Pukki (Norwich), Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace)

Most nutmegs (United):
9 - Marcus Rashford
5 - Daniel James, Scott McTominay
4 - Fred

In terms of the Premier League as a whole, Wolves are in third spot behind United and Spurs. Rather surprisingly, Chelsea are at the bottom with only eight nutmegs logged by Blues players in 2019/20 thus far.

It is a skill that fans love and players hate being on the wrong end, of so keep an eye out for more happening when the action gets under way again.
