James Garner and Brandon Williams celebrate a goal for Manchester United Under-23s against Newcastle United

Under-23s: The story so far in 2019/20

Friday 11 October 2019 10:43

It’s been a great start to the season for Manchester United Under-23s, with Neil Wood’s side making strong progress in two competitions.

The Reds currently sit second in Premier League 2 Division 2, having won five of our seven games to date.

James Garner in particular has started the campaign in fine goalscoring fettle, netting in big away wins at West Bromwich Albion and Newcastle United, as well as the 2-0 victory over Reading at Leigh Sports Village.

Our youngsters were given the opportunity to trot out at Old Trafford, where a late goal from Largie Ramazani – one of five the 18-year-old has struck in 2019/20 – secured a 2-2 draw against early leaders West Ham United.

Home wins over Fulham and Norwich City have followed, with the three points against the Cottagers secured late on in an absorbing match which saw goalkeeper Matej Kovar save an injury-time penalty.

The only league defeat thus far came away at Aston Villa with several players either injured or called up to first-team duty – but Aliou Traore’s consolation effort in that game was certainly one to remember.

Our first foray into the Leasing.com trophy saw our youngsters drawn alongside the senior teams of Doncaster Rovers, Lincoln City and Rotherham United.

Goals from Ethan Laird and Ramazani got us off the mark in fine style at Rotherham, while Garner’s solitary strike helped see off Lincoln and move the Reds into pole position in Group H.

A point from our next game – at Doncaster on 29 October – will ensure progress to the next round.
