Will United appeal Casemiro's ban?

Tuesday 07 February 2023 12:30

Erik ten Hag has revealed that Manchester United will not be appealing Casemiro's three-match suspension for the red card he was shown during Saturday's 2-1 win over Crystal Palace.

The Brazilian was given his marching orders by referee Andre Marriner in the 70th minute of our clash with the Eagles.

Jeffrey Schlupp's foul on Antony resulted in the coming together of players from both sides down by the touchline and, after a pitchside VAR check, Marriner deemed Casemiro to have committed violent conduct during an incident involving Palace midfielder Will Hughes.

Our no.18 therefore missed the closing stages of the game, which United successfully saw out despite Schlupp halving the deficit, and he will now sit out this week's home-and-away Premier League meetings with Leeds United, plus the visit of Leicester City on Sunday 19 February.

The suspension does not affect Casemiro's ability to play in the Europa League play-off first leg in Barcelona, next Thursday (16 February).

During Tuesday's pre-match press conference, ahead of our Old Trafford game with Leeds United, Ten Hag was asked whether the club had considered attempting to get the ban overturned.

“Consider? Yeah,” Erik admitted, before explaining why an appeal had not been launched.

“Still, for me, it's not the right decision [to send Casemiro off] but I don't think we have a chance in a legal process.”

With Casemiro joining the injured Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek on the sidelines, the stage could be set for Marcel Sabitzer to make his full United debut.

The Austrian was introduced for the final 20 minutes of the victory over Palace and was recognised by Ten Hag for his game intelligence and composure on the ball.

United also have two players missing in attack, with Anthony Martial still out and Antony unavailable for this one.

In his press conference, the manager confirmed two forwards will miss the match against Leeds, plus Casemiro.

Ten Hag played down the impact those absent players may have on upcoming games, stating his belief in the strength of his squad.

"I'm the manager, I always have to play with the players who are available,” he added. “We have a squad, we have many good players available in that squad, who are not always in the starting XI. So, others [will] get the chance and I have to do it.

“After the game, I can't say Casemiro is not there, Anthony Martial is not there, no, we have to win.

“This squad, all players in [it], are Man United capable, so they have to perform tomorrow and we have to win the games no matter who is coming on the pitch.”
