Stoney and Heath up for WSL awards

Saturday 21 November 2020 18:08

Casey Stoney and Tobin Heath are up for November’s Barclays FA WSL Manager and Player of the Month Awards respectively.

United Women's superb start to the season has continued in November with the Reds still unbeaten in the Women's Super League this season. This month, Stoney's side has further impressed with solid defensive work and attacking flair.

At the time of writing, our women sit top of the WSL with 17 points after seven games, however, Chelsea could reclaim the top spot should they win their game in hand.

In recognition of their own individual performances and the team's success, Casey and Tobin are both up for the November awards.

The Reds produced a sterling second-half comeback to deny the Blues in the first derby of the season.

Our manager, who also was up for the award for October, guided her team to an impressive win against Arsenal, thanks to a late Ella Toone goal. United then masterminded a great comeback against crosstown rivals Manchester City to secure a 2-2 result and a point.

The nomination read: "Casey Stoney’s side overcame a daunting schedule in November with an impressive 1-0 victory over league leaders Arsenal and a 2-2 draw against local rivals Manchester City, taking them to the top of the table."

Casey will be up against Emma Hayes (Chelsea) and Gareth Taylor (Manchester City) for the accolade.

Tobin has taken United by storm since her summer arrival and truly showed her class this month. Her impressive display against Arsenal was followed up by another great performance against City. The American inspired the Reds' comeback against our rivals with a rocket of a finish to half City's 2-0 advantage in the WSL derby.

The nomination read: "Casey Stoney’s side faced the biggest test to their title credentials in November but came through with flying colours as they defeated Arsenal and secured a draw against Manchester City - and Tobin Heath’s influence was clear to see in both games. She was a constant threat during the 1-0 win over Arsenal while her stunning second-half strike inspired the Reds’ comeback against City, lashing the ball home emphatically as United recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and maintain their place at the WSL summit."

Our no.77 faces competition from Ellen White (Manchester City), Pernille Harder (Chelsea), Hannah Hampton (Birmingham City) and Anita Asante (Aston Villa) for the prize.

Voting closes at midday on Friday 27 November.
