United achieve landmark Premier League win

Wednesday 19 January 2022 21:49

First it was Anthony Elanga, then it was Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford, peeling off in the direction of Manchester United's travelling support and in doing so, celebrating a landmark 300th away victory in the Premier League.

United are the first club in the competition's history to achieve the feat, doing so on our first visit to the Brentford Community Stadium, the 55th Premier League ground we've finished as victors.

Here’s all you need to know about those 300 victories and keep your eyes peeled for further features over the coming days…

The right way to celebrate a record-setting 300th away win... with the Red Army.

WE'VE ALMOST WON EVERYWHERE

Forty-nine clubs other than United have played Premier League football since 1992 and we’ve beaten 47 of them away from home. Huddersfield Town won four home points against the Reds during their two seasons in the big time, while Swindon Town's only top-flight campaign featured a 2-2 draw with Sir Alex Ferguson’s reigning champions at the County Ground. We have now added Brentford to the list too, after tonight's victory.

Only five of the Premier League’s 59 away stadiums haven’t hosted a United victory. The County Ground and Huddersfield’s John Smith’s Stadium are joined in this list by three grounds which no longer exist. United failed to beat Derby, Middlesbrough and Sunderland at their old Baseball Ground, Ayresome Park and Roker Park homes respectively, but there have been plenty of victories to enjoy at their shiny new venues.

OUR FAVOURITE GROUNDS

Villa Park and Goodison Park have often been pleasurable venues to visit, as we’ve won 17 times at Aston Villa and Everton over the years. Although we drew 1-1 there back in December, United have tended to take the three points at St James’ Park (14 wins) more regularly than not. Positions four and five in the list are shared by Anfield, where we always love to win, and Tottenham’s old White Hart Lane, with 12 victories apiece.

MILESTONE WINS

You’d have to go way back to August 1992 for the Reds’ first Premier League win on the road. It came at Southampton’s old ground, The Dell, with Dion Dublin popping up with the only goal in the closing minutes. It took just under 10 years for us to rack up a century of travelling triumphs in the competition, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's double giving us the landmark result on a February 2002 trip to Charlton Athletic. Bolton’s Macron Stadium – as it was called back then – played host to United’s 200th PL away win, with Wayne Rooney netting a hat-trick during a resounding 5-0 thrashing in September 2011.

United’s biggest away victory was the memorable 8-1 shellacking of Nottingham Forest in February 1999. Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke netted doubles to put the game beyond the relegation strugglers, but that day is remembered for Solskjaer’s incredible 12-minute, four-goal haul as a substitute.

SEASON RECORDS

Over one-sixth of our 300 wins on the road were achieved across four seasons in which we managed 13 victories apiece. In three of them – 1993/94, 1999/00 and 2006/07 – the Reds ended the season as champions, but we were pipped to the post in 2011/12 when, despite a Rooney strike giving us victory at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, Manchester City took the title on goal difference. Funnily enough, the completed season which saw us win the fewest away games (five) came when we clinched our record-breaking 19th title. Only Stoke, West Brom, Blackpool, Wigan and West Ham were defeated on their home patch, but we topped the league by nine points thanks to a formidable home campaign.

WHERE DO OTHER TEAMS RANK?

Our nearest challengers in terms of the most Premier League away wins are Chelsea, with the Blues racking up 259. They’re followed by Arsenal on 246 and Liverpool on 239, while Manchester City have 188 away wins in the top flight since it was rebranded in 1992.
