Match Rewind: Choose your favourite 5 May match

This is where we ask you to choose which classic Manchester United matches you want to relive in full.

Streaming on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays each week, there’s been plenty of opportunity to look back on some cherished Red memories so far.

Our latest one is a little bit different, as we take a look back at several United classics which have fallen on 5 May. There is a Champions League semi-final, a Manchester derby, a four-goal thriller against Liverpool, and a trophy-lifting win, so choose wisely...

ARSENAL 1 UNITED 3 (CHAMPIONS LEAGUE, 2008/09)

On 5 May 2009, Sir Alex Ferguson's Reds booked our place in the UEFA Champions League final, as we sailed through our semi-final second leg against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. After a 1-0 win in the opening leg, United escaped into the distance with two quick-fire away goals in north London, courtesy of a close-range finish from Ji-sung Park and a 40-yard rocket of a free-kick from Cristiano Ronaldo.

Our third goal of the night, and fourth on aggregate, demonstrated our lightning pace on the break, as Rooney finished off an attack which started from a corner for the Gunners. The 4-1 final score on aggregate meant that we were through to our second Champions League final in as many years, where we would ultimately come up short to Barcelona in Rome.

MAN CITY 0 UNITED 1 (PREMIER LEAGUE, 06/07)

Not much tops a win over our local rivals, and there was extra significance behind this Manchester derby in May 2007, because United were embroiled in a fight for the Premier League title with Chelsea. There was controversy early on when City defender Michael Ball appeared to stamp on Cristiano Ronaldo, which was unseen by referee Rob Styles and drew frustration and anger from the United technical area. However, our Portuguese star would have the last laugh when his penalty, scored in the 34th minute, gave United a valuable lead.

The home fans were given some hope with a penalty of their own 11 minutes from the end of the game, when Ball was brought down by Wes Brown. But Edwin van der Sar was there to keep United in front, denying Darius Vassell's spot-kick, which was fired straight at the legs of our Dutch goalkeeper. The result was pivotal, as it meant United were in pole position to get our hands on the 2006/07 Premier League trophy.

LIVERPOOL 2 UNITED 2 (PREMIER LEAGUE, 98/99)

There had already been a few fiery encounters between the reds from Merseyside and the Reds from Manchester in the 1998/99 campaign, with United victorious 2-0 in the league at Old Trafford, and coming from behind to win 2-1 in an FA Cup third-round thriller.

This meeting at Anfield was even more important – a vital staging post during an incredibly tight Premier League title fight with Arsenal. 

Sir Alex's side raced into the lead in a whirlwind of a match through a Dwight Yorke header, and a Denis Irwin penalty meant that we had the game in a vice-like grip after 56 minutes. Liverpool fought back, however, with a penalty kick of their own from Jamie Redknapp, before they were handed an advantage when Irwin was sent off for a second bookable offence, ruling him out of the FA Cup final.

But former Red Paul Ince would land a crushing blow on United in the 89th minute, drawing the hosts level and putting Arsenal three points clear in a title race which United would eventually overturn.

MIDDLESBROUGH 0 UNITED 3 (PREMIER LEAGUE, 95/96)

At the beginning of the 1995/96 campaign, Reds fans were told that "you can't with anything with kids" by Liverpool legend Alan Hansen, after a youthful United were beaten 3-1 by Aston Villa. Nine months on, a comfortable 3-0 win on Teesside wrapped up our third Premier League title in four years, at the expense of Newcastle United, who had spectacularly collapsed in the second half of the season.

The Reds were up and running after 15 minutes, when David May rose at the far post to head home his first goal of the season from Ryan Giggs's inswinging corner. And it was a corner from Giggs that led to our second. Andy Cole, brought on as a substitute just seconds earlier, was there to flick the ball home with his first touch of the game. After being our provider for the first two, Giggsy got in on the act with a wonder strike from range to wrap up the points against Bryan Robson's 'Boro.

The Riverside stadium, in its first season since opening in the summer of '95, saw full-time celebrations on the pitch from United, who lifted the trophy ahead of Newcastle by four points.
