Ex-Reds name their Young Player of the Season

Our MUTV Group Chat panel is divided on who should be named the Premier League Young Player of the Season, after four Manchester United players were nominated for the 2019/20 award.

Amazingly, we made up 50 per cent of the eight-man shortlist that was released earlier today, with Mason Greenwood, Dean Henderson (on loan at Sheffield United), Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford all included.

The four United players face competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Mason Mount and Christian Pulisic (both Chelsea) in the public poll, which you can register your vote in now.

In today’s episode of MUTV Group Chat, our panel of former players offer their reaction to the news and explain their picks for the prestigious prize…

Ben Thornley:
“If you had asked me in the first half of the season then it would have been Marcus Rashford, but obviously with his injury, I think it is very, very difficult to look beyond what Mason Greenwood has done since he has come into the first team. As a young lad he has scored 17 goals so far this season and doesn't look fazed at all. He takes each step as it comes, from the 18s into the 23s and now into the first team. He is completely unaffected, gets on with his job and does it to the best of his abilities, so for me it would be Mason Greenwood but it is a tight call between them all.”
Danny Webber: “I would go for Mason as well. I think the rest of the nominees have been fantastic, like Trent, Pulisic, Mount and Henderson, but I just think all of those boys have played professional football before this season and had a campaign elsewhere. Mason has come in for his first full season and scored 17 goals under pressure. Scoring 17 goals is difficult at the top level, but he has done it with ease and proven himself to be a real specialist. I don't think the world has seen even 50 per cent of what he is capable of, still, so for that to be his first proper season in a Man United team, playing in a team in transition, I would have to go for Mason.”
Wes Brown: “Listen, Marcus will be up there! I think I agree with Ben about Mason, but if the public are voting then I think Marcus will just be a little bit ahead of him. Obviously, his injury killed him a little bit, but he was saving us in games at times with the goals he was scoring. For me, it is probably Marcus but I can understand people saying Greenwood. If Ole gave him a few more games earlier on - which I'm glad he didn't because I think he did it perfectly - we would have seen a lot more from him. But Marcus, for me, has still been the main man for me this season. I know he got injured and was out for a while, but without him at the beginning of the season we would have been struggling.”

David May: “It is quite something to score 17 goals when you are 18. When Marcus got injured and he came in, Mason stepped up the plate right away and his ability to score goals out of nothing is scary. Most times he is quiet in games and then he will just come alive to bang one in, or two in. He has been absolutely class and a breath of fresh air. For me I would give it to him because of his age, and also because of the pressure he was under because of Marcus missing those games with his back injury.”
