Ole becomes third-fastest United boss to 50 wins

Wednesday 23 September 2020 09:00

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recorded his 50th win as Manchester United manager on Tuesday evening, as the Reds won 3-0 away at Luton Town to progress to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

The Norwegian reached the milestone in his 92nd fixture in all competitions since taking charge in December 2018, and becomes the third-fastest to the mark after Ernest Mangnall (78 games) and Jose Mourinho (81 games).

Solskjaer becomes the 13th manager to reach the number, and will overtake Louis van Gaal (54) with a further five wins.

But Ole has some way to go before reaching the top of tree. To do so, he'll first need to displace Sir Matt Busby, who has 576 victories to his name, and Sir Alex Ferguson, who recorded a mammoth 895 successes between 1986 and 2013.

HOW DID SOLSKJAER REACH HIS HALF-CENTURY?

The Norwegian took over as caretaker manager in late 2018, and got off to a superb start by beating Cardiff City 5-1 - the first time the club had notched five in a Premier League game since Sir Alex Ferguson's final match in charge (a 5-5 draw with West Bromwich Albion).

Ole won his first eight games in charge, and his first nine consecutive away games – both runs were club records.

There was then a 19-match unbeaten run from January to July 2020, which delivered 14 wins, as United overhauled Leicester City and Chelsea to seal a third-place Premier League finish, and progressed to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, the FA Cup and the Europa League.
WIN NO.50

After a disappointing start to 2020/21, with defeat to Crystal Palace in the Premier League, Ole recorded his 50th managerial victory with the club he represented in such distinguished fashion as a player, via a 3-0 third-round Carabao Cup win against Luton Town.

The Reds took the lead with a Juan Mata penalty, and added two further strikes late on thanks to substitutes Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

WHAT IS SOLSKJAER'S BEST WIN SO FAR?

Ole's tenure has been studded with big wins against high-quality opposition. He has beaten Chelsea four times – more than any other club he has faced – while Pep Guardiola's Manchester City have been sorted on three occasions.

But possibly Solskjaer's most famous win remains the remarkable 3-1 Champions League victory against Paris Saint-Germain in March 2019, which overturned a 2-0 advantage for the Parisians from the first leg – and with 10 first-team players unavailable due to injuries and suspension!

Having led his beloved club back into the Champions League this term, Solskjaer will hope there are many more wins to come in Europe's biggest competition during the coming months.
