Ole reflects on 'deserved' point for United

On a cold and rainy night at Old Trafford, the Reds took the lead on the stroke of half-time, as Scott McTominay rocketed in his first senior goal on home turf, before Arsenal hit back after the break with a helping hand from VAR, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyamg slotted home.

United rallied and came close to netting a winner at the end, as Marcus Rashford had a fine free-kick saved by Bernd Leno in the Arsenal net.

Speaking to MUTV, Sky Sports and in his post-match press conference, the boss analysed the performance, McTominay's stunning strike and the impact of VAR.

BOTH TEAMS WENT FOR THE WIN

"Probably a deserved point for each. Both wanted to win, no team deserved it more than the other. A positive start, positive attitude, desire. Now we've got to learn to make these 1-0s into 2-0s, 3-0s, 4-0s even, we need a second goal. We can't just put the brake on, like we did in the second half and let the other team come in. Southampton, Wolverhampton, now, we're getting the first goal and we need the next one."

SUPER SCOTT MCTOMINAY

"Yeah, a great strike, a great counter-attack first. We showed the legs, the pace, a great strike by Scotty. I've never hit a ball like that.

"He's playing well. He's learning. He's one of the six Academy boys that started the game today, Mason [Greenwood] came on too. That's a great plus for us and something we're proud of and Scotty will only get better and better."

VAR CONTROVERSY

"Ashley [Young] certainly holds his hand up because he’s looking at the linesman and maybe hesitates a little bit. Maybe he could have put a block in - that probably would have helped David [De Gea], but it’s no consolation for us now because it’s a perfectly good goal for them. He probably should have kept the flag down.

"It made an impact on the situation by raising the flag. When it's that way, you could wait and then do it later."

A POTENTIAL PENALTY?

"There was a handball shout [for us] - it’s like loads of the penalty decisions that if the referee doesn’t make it, you can’t really go back and have it. But it’s a work in progress. I’m for the right decisions and they definitely deserved their goal today."

SEEING OUT LEADS IN GAMES 

"We got 1-0 up and we didn't get the second goal that we wanted to get. That's what this team needs to learn: to be more clinical at both ends of the pitch. So many games, we have been 1-0 up, but we'll learn, definitely. I think today was a steep learning curve for a few, because it was a bad goal to give away, but then again, sometimes, you make those passes and we play out and it looks good and, today, maybe it's time that we learnt from it.

"You thought it was going to be one of those nights. Under the lights, you thought the Stretford End would suck that ball in, we'd get that win. It didn't happen, but the attitude and desire is there and the signs are there for us as coaches to see. That's a team with loads of belief and we just need to learn finish games off in a better manner when we're winning 1-0."

POSITIVES TO DRAW ON

"There are many things that we can look at and many things that give me loads of confidence. We can talk about performances but it’s the results that matter. You can talk about results, I can talk about the six out of seven games that were good performances. West Ham was below par but not as bad as you lot made it out to be."
