Friday 10 August 2018 23:38

Paul Pogba was voted our Man of the Match on Twitter after his first-half penalty and all-action display inspired the Reds to a 2-1 opening-day victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford.

The Frenchman, fresh from winning the World Cup, opened the scoring for the Reds from the penalty spot after just three minutes following a Daniel Amartey handball. Our no.6 kicked on following the opener and dominated the midfield, as well as making some crucial headed interceptions at the other end of the pitch.

Wearing the armband, Pogba, completed 68 passes, which was the most for United, and 39 of those were in the opposition half. He had two shots, both on target, and again topped the list in terms of duels with 19, winning all his aerial battles.

Goals from Pogba and Shaw helped the Reds overcome a spirited Foxes side at Old Trafford.

Those impressive stats helped Pogba top the post-match poll on our official Twitter account with 43 per cent of the final vote, just ahead of fellow goalscorer Luke Shaw (29 per cent), the solid Eric Bailly (20 per cent) and new-boy Fred (eight per cent).

Boss Jose Mourinho praised Pogba's performance afterwards: "Paul was fantastic - his contribution was amazing," he said. “Tremendous. Of course, he exceeds the expectations and exceeds what we agreed with him because we thought a maximum of one hour. I think he felt that the team needed him a lot."

Pogba added: “We knew it was going to be difficult. I didn’t have any pre-season. I came back on Monday. It was difficult for the legs, but we played very well. We just want to go up and up, that’s it."

Opta also revealed Pogba's penalty was the quickest scored in a Premier League game since February 2015, when Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero netted from the spot against Newcastle United after only 72 seconds.
