Scholes: Rashford is our player of the season so far

United great Paul Scholes says Marcus Rashford has been the Reds' outstanding performer so far in 2022/23.

The news comes on the back of Rashford's two-goal heroics against Wales at the World Cup, where he helped England qualify for the knockout stages as winners of Group B.

However, his international form is no surprise to those who've closely followed his club exploits over the last few months.

Our no.10 is United's top scorer under Erik ten Hag, with eight goals across all competitions, and Scholes – speaking on our weekly show The Debate – had no hesitation in identifying him as our leading performer.

The Debate | Who is our player of the season so far? Scholesy is backing Marcus Rashford all the way…

“I'll go for Marcus,” said Scholes, who lifted 11 Premier League titles during almost two decades of near-constant success at the club.

“I think he's turned it around. He's had a bit of a tough 18 months but I think he's been looking really dangerous this season. Hopefully he's carried it on a little bit with England as well, with the minutes he's played.

“Hopefully he can come back and have a really strong end to the season as well.”
Scholesy's former Reds team-mate David May was unable to narrow his own selection down to just one player, though. While fellow panellist Zarah Connolly split her choice between Rashford and another World Cup participant.

“The four signings Ten Hag has signed have been really positive – Eriksen, Antony, Martinez and Casemiro,” explained May.

“Can I split it between Rashford and Eriksen? ” enquired Connolly.

“As a Red, you're always rooting for Rashford. You always want him to do really well and it's really nice to be finally seeing that spark back in him this season. Let's hope he can keep onto it.”
