Jones reveals how Reds remain competitive

Phil Jones has revealed how Manchester United’s first-team players are keeping up their competitive spirits during this time of self-isolation.

While all members of the squad are housebound at present due to the coronavirus pandemic, they’ve continued to stay in regular contact with one another.

But with professional athletes there’s always going to be a bit of friendly competition, and the players have come up with new ways to challenge each other.

“We have a WhatsApp group and we’re doing our day-to-day routines on the bike, or going out for a run,” Phil told club media.
“We’ve all been posting our times in the group to keep everyone involved and engaged. That’s the only way to keep in contact at the moment – via technology. It keeps us together and keeps us talking."

Plenty of United players, including the likes of Harry Maguire, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard, have been posting their fitness regimes on social media and Phil explained how he’s been staying in shape from home.

“Well the government has stated that we’re allowed one outside activity every day, so I try and get outside and go for a 5k run every day,” said the defender.
“I’m just trying to keep fit every day and maintain my fitness. I also have a cycling machine at home so I can top my fitness up on the bike if needed.

“It’s a difficult time for everyone, but we’re taking precautions, and rightly so,” he added. “I miss football obviously, I miss the lads and being in and around the changing room, and doing what I love doing every day. It’s all I’ve known for the last 15 or so years so it’s difficult.

“It’s also nice to see my kids a lot more, given there’s a lot of travelling and staying in hotels overnight [as a footballer], but I’m raring to come back, whenever that is.”

The 28-year-old also had a message for fans in these troubling times.

“Just be patient and keep supporting us through these tough times,” he said.

“We’re as frustrated as you are, but sometimes football has to take a back seat. Not often, but this is one of those times – lives and health are so much more important than football.

“I’m sure people understand and we’re just supporting those on the front line, like the NHS. We’ll pull together and get through it, and I’m sure the good times will just be around the corner again.”
