Romelu Lukaku and Jose Mourinho

Lukaku: The manager deserves more respect

Romelu Lukaku has described the unity between the Manchester United players, manager and fans as “something beautiful” and he has praised Jose Mourinho for the way in which he is trying to help the team improve.

During an engaging interview with us, the Belgium international spoke passionately about the hard work that Mourinho and his team-mates are doing to ensure the Reds continue to build momentum on the back of the important win at Burnley before the international break.

And ahead of the next Premier League test, away at Watford, Lukaku gave a staunch defence of his manager.

“After the game against Tottenham, even though we lost, I really felt a unity between the fans and the players and the manager. That was something beautiful to see,” he explained.

“A lot of people are coming for the manager and I don’t understand why. He’s just trying to build a fortress out of this football club and we as players we know that.

“The manager is a winner, he’s somebody that is a real personality. He wants to help us, he wants us to win and it’s normal that when he loses he gets angry so I don’t understand why some people are trying to come after him because some managers in this league are getting a pass, and he doesn’t.

“I think people should respect him more but we, as players, are going to react on the pitch. When we played against Burnley that was the first [reaction] and now we want to keep going.”

Watford are currently riding high in the league with four wins but four and while Lukaku knows they will be difficult opponents on Saturday, he said the Reds are fully aware of what’s needed if Mourinho’s men are to come away with three points.

Jose's update on five players article

Jose Mourinho has provided an update on several first-team stars ahead of United's trip to Watford on Saturday.

“I’m not impressed about any team. I respect what Watford are doing right now and they’ve been doing really well this season. I don’t mean to be disrespectful but after I saw Leicester win the league that made it click in my mind that whatever team is up there deserves to be up there.

“Now we have to make sure that we not only match their physicality and the way they play, but we have to add a bit more quality and a bit more spice to win the game.”
