Paul Pogba salutes goalscorer Scott McTominay against Arsenal

McTominay: Reds have got to be more ruthless

Man-of-the Match Scott McTominay wants United to rediscover the killer instinct in a bid to turn the screw on opponents.

The Reds haven’t scored two in a match since we thumped Chelsea 4-0 in the opening Premier League match of the season in August.

Being unable to carve out that second goal has cost United points against Wolves, Southampton and now Arsenal.

McTominay, who scored his first senior Old Trafford goal in the 1-1 draw with the Gunners insists the Reds must now become merciless after he, too, squandered a great headed chance to win the match.

“I probably should have scored that header and that was disappointing,” he told MUTV.

“There were a lot of different chances we had in the game and it is about us being more ruthless in front of goal now.

“I have said it in previous weeks we have to get more opportunities and create more. That is something the gaffer, Kieran [McKenna] and Michael [Carrick] are reiterating in the training sessions.

Paul Pogba is frustrated as another chance goes begging against Arsenal.

“We are Manchester United and everything is so well documented but we have a real good bunch of players who are a tight-knit group and the team spirit is really, really good. We keep everything in house and it is all positive.”

After McTominay gave United an interval lead with a screaming Goal-of-the-Month contender, Arsenal nicked the point with a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equaliser in the 58th minute.

“It is definitely a disappointment with different opportunities we had in the game and the way we started in the first 45 minutes, because we were right on the front foot and doing a lot off things right,” said Scott.

“I thought we were good value for three points tonight.

“It is little mistakes that we have to start cutting out because they cost you games, and points in this respect. Everyone in the dressing room knows it is a tough one to take because we were on top.”

Despite the disappointment of the result, McTominay was delighted to have opened his home senior goal account.

“I had a funny feeling in the hotel today and that I was going to score at Wolves as well, so it must be the sleeping I am doing in the afternoons,” said Scott.

“It was an amazing feeling to score my first goal at Old Trafford. I scored a couple in the Reserves but it is always a nice feeling to score in front of 76,000 people. It was amazing.

“The crowd were absolutely unbelievable.”

McTominay didn’t stick around to drink in the crowd adulation after his shot hit the net.

“Typical midfielder, I was just running back to the kick-off because I just wanted to go again. You always want more,” he said.
