Sergio Romero

Ever-ready Romero always aims high

Sergio Romero says he still trains as hard as he did when he first started his career, to ensure he’s always ready to play for Manchester United if needed.

The Argentinian goalkeeper hopes to be involved in tonight’s Europa League clash at Old Trafford against Partizan Belgrade as the Reds look to seal qualification for the knock-out stages.

Romero was on duty for the 1-0 win over Partizan in Belgrade two weeks ago and he produced a number of top saves during a hard-fought 90 minutes against the Serbians.

The victory was Romero’s 28th clean sheet in 47 appearances for United and that's a stat which gives him a lot of satisfaction.

“It makes me feel relaxed, and it makes me happy too,” says Sergio, in this evening's edition of United Review.

“In spite of not playing so regularly, the sheer hard work you put in every single day is still there.”

Safe hands - Romero and his fellow Argentina international, Marcos Rojo, kept Partizan out in Belgrade.

“We all work extremely hard - myself and Lee [Grant] alongside David [De Gea] - every single day. We know that we are fit and ready to play whenever we are called upon.

“The fact that I have kept a clean sheet in roughly half or just over half of however many games makes me feel really pleased and gives me peace of mind. It makes me believe that anything can happen and that all I have to do is keep working hard and wait for my opportunities.”

Reflecting on a tough, but successful night in Belgrade, our goalkeeper continued: “We played really well in Serbia. The chances that fell to them were either saved by me or cleared by our defence.

“We tried to block all their corners as they had quite a few very tall players, I think it was almost a perfect game for us, despite the fact that the pitch was not in a great state to encourage good football. It was a very tough and close-run game and the most important thing was Anthony’s [Martial] goal, along with the three points we were heading home with.”

Romero was between the posts for our other Europa League home game earlier this season – a 1-0 win against Astana – and he says he feels stronger than ever.

“Even though I’m 32 now, I train and put in the same effort as I did when I was only 20 years old, full of the hopes of making a career as a professional player,” he declared.

“I haven’t changed at all, in anything, and let’s hope that in the years I have left at the club I can show the fans that I’m still here and able to do a job and that I feel very much at ease and very happy at this club. And I want to try and keep winning things here.”
