Solskjaer discusses our goalkeeping situation

Friday 18 September 2020 10:44

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken positively about Manchester United’s goalkeepers, with long-term no.1 David De Gea and youth product Dean Henderson working well together in training.

In a press conference to preview Saturday’s Premier League opener against Crystal Palace, the manager remained coy about who will start at Old Trafford, but heaped praise on his stoppers and explained how both men have been driving each other on at the Aon Training Complex.

Solskjaer was impressed by De Gea’s recent performances with Spain and appreciated comments made by head coach Luis Enrique, who asked the Spanish press to celebrate David’s quality.

The boss is also pleased by Henderson’s displays in training following his return from a two-year loan spell at Sheffield United. And when asked which goalkeeper will start against Palace, the manager remained tight-lipped, choosing instead to praise the duo and reveal why Sergio Romero is unavailable.

“I’m not going to tell you the team today, no, I’m not,” said Ole. “But the goalkeeper training has been fantastic to watch. It’s so enjoyable. It’s the highest possible quality you can imagine.

“All the goalkeeper coaches are really enjoying working with them and watching when we go into the games and some of the stuff they do. Some of the stuff is fantastic. It’s going to be an interesting, interesting thing for many to follow.

“I know that it’s great to see Luis Enrique talking about David the way he did after his internationals. Because coaches, you know, who work with players, they’ve got the respect that he shows, when he talks about ‘Oh, it’ll be nice if the press suddenly wrote what a great goalkeeper we have’.
“And it would be great if you, the press, wrote good things about them [De Gea and Henderson] too. And they’re working well together at the moment. Sergio [Romero] hasn’t come back yet, because he was given some extra time with his family. It would be nice for you to write about not just starting to make problems between the two of them, but how they’ve worked really well together.”

Solskjaer’s starting XI for the match against Crystal Palace will be announced at 16:30 BST on Saturday, exactly one hour ahead of kick-off at the Theatre of Dreams.
