Squads confirmed for Treble Reunion match

A reunion match is taking place on Sunday 26 May (kick-off 15:00 BST), exactly 20 years since the day when United came from behind to defeat Bayern 2-1 at Barcelona’s Nou Camp and win the Champions League to seal the unprecedented Treble.

All funds raised from the anniversary game will support Manchester United Foundation’s work with young people across the local area.

Here, we round up which legends will be pulling on their shirts and lacing up their boots again...

WHO WILL PLAY FOR UNITED?

Many members of the Reds’ Treble-winning squad will be involved. For example, Peter Schmeichel will be back in goal, with Raimond van der Gouw – who played in the last Legends match against Bayern Munich, at Old Trafford four years ago – also signing up.

Former United captain Gary Neville will take part, with Henning Berg, Wes Brown, Denis Irwin, Ronny Johnsen, David May and Jaap Stam providing further defensive options.

Class of ’92 graduates David Beckham, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes will make up the midfield, alongside Jesper Blomqvist and Jonathan Greening.

In attack, our four fab forwards from 1998/99 will all be reunited. Current manager and Champions League final match-winner Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will therefore join Andy Cole, the Treble campaign’s leading scorer Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham in the squad.

Karel Poborsky, Louis Saha and Mikael Silvestre were not at the club during the Treble-winning season but, as regulars in previous Legends matches and keen supporters of Manchester United Foundation, they are also set to play a part in the game.

The team will be managed once again by our legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who will have Steve McClaren alongside him as assistant manager and former Reds captain Bryan Robson as head coach.

WHAT ABOUT BAYERN MUNICH?

The German club will bring seven players from their 1998/99 squad – namely defenders Markus Babbel and Sammy Kuffour, midfielders Stefan Effenberg, Thorsten Fink and Lothar Matthaus, and forwards Giovane Elber and Carsten Jancker.

Of those players, five started the Champions League final against United 20 years ago – Babbel, Kuffour, Effenberg, Matthaus and Jancker. Fink appeared as a late substitute in the second half.

There are 10 players in the squad who have featured in either of the two previous Legends matches between the clubs; United drew 3-3 at the Allianz Arena in 2014, before winning 4-2 in the return match at Old Trafford the following year.

Those players are goalkeeper Hans-Jorg Butt, defenders Babbel, Hans Pfluger and Daniel van Buyten, midfielders Marcel Witeczek, Markus Schupp and Michael Sternkopf, and forwards Elber, Roy Makaay and Paulo Sergio.

Other notable names include former Manchester City defender Martin Demichelis, ex-Italy international striker Luca Toni and current Croatia assistant manager Ivica Olic – the latter of which scored a winning goal against United in the Champions League quarter-finals in 2010.

Bayern will be managed on the day by former 1. FC Kaiserslautern boss Michael Henke, who will be assisted by player manager Klaus Augenthaler - the former Bayern defender who played at the club for 15 years and went on to be assistant manager under five different coaches.
