Talking Points: United 1 West Ham 0

Under the floodlights at the Theatre of Dreams, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men conquered David Moyes’s side after extra time. A 98th-minute goal from Scott McTominay proved decisive as the Reds ran out 1-0 winners and reached the next round of the competition.

While it wasn't a classic in a hard-fought cup tie at a freezing Old Trafford, there was still plenty to discuss after the game...

Marcus Rashford made his 250th appearance for the Reds in the cup tie. The Academy graduate has been ever-present for Ole this season as he has been involved in all 36 matches so far this campaign. The 23-year-old became the fourth-youngest to reach the landmark for United, behind George Best, Ryan Giggs and Norman Whiteside.

Since making his first-team debut in 2016, Rashford has scored 83 goals and now ranks 25th in United’s all-time top scoring charts, having surpassed Eric Cantona with his strike against Southampton last week.

In extra-time against the Hammers, he marked the occasion by setting up Scott McTominay's winner with his 27th goal involvement of the campaign. 

Coincidentally, Anthony Martial also celebrated 250 appearances in a red shirt against the Hammers. The Frenchman was lively against the Hammers and was unfortunate to see several shots blocked en route to goal during the game. In his United career to date, our no. 9 has found the back of the net 78 times and set up 49 goals.

For the third consecutive match, Scott McTominay found the back of the net. Following his strike against Southampton and the header in Saturday's draw with Everton, our no. 39 added another one to his tally when he grabbed the only goal against West Ham. The Scottish midfielder, who had come on as second-half substitute, received the ball from Rashford before he slammed it home with a ruthless strike to win the game. The goal was his seventh of the campaign, with six of them coming at Old Trafford. 

MASON EMULATES BERBA

Mason Greenwood has been lively recently and against West Ham our no. 11 showed his confidence once again. The Academy product pulled off an outrageous piece of skill in first-half stoppage time, getting passed Mark Noble with a dribble often referred to as a ‘Berba-spin’. That stems from a move former United striker Dimitar Berbatov produced against, coincidently, West Ham in 2008. The Bulgarian dribbled passed James Collins by the touchline before setting up Cristiano Ronaldo during a 2-0 goal against the Hammers 13 years ago. Deservedly so, Greenwood’s move received a lot of attention on social media.

AMAD IN THE SQUAD

Youngster Amad was involved in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s matchday squad for the first time against the Hammers. The Ivorian attacker has impressed for the Under-23s following his transfer from Italian side Atalanta. The 18-year-old has scored three times and assisted four in two matches for Neil Wood's side. Although Amad didn't feature on Tuesday, the experience will be invaluable for the youngster and he'll no doubt make his maiden first-team bow in the weeks and months to come.

OLE MIXING THINGS UP

Our manager decided to make six changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Everton at the weekend. Dean Henderson, Alex Telles, Fred, Nemanja Matic, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial all started the game at the Theatre of Dreams. As well, in extra-time Brandon Williams came on for his first United appearance since our victory against Watford in the third round of the FA Cup. With five days until our next game, there's plenty of time for the Reds to rest and recuperate ahead of the trip to West Bromwich Albion.

BEATING HAMMERS = TROPHY?

The Reds have overcome West Ham on six occasions in the FA Cup and three times - in 1983, 1985 and 2016 - United have gone all the way in the tournament. Fingers crossed history repeats itself in 2021.

United are through to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the seventh season running. Who we will face will be decided during the draw on Thursday evening, which starts at 19:45 GMT and will be broadcast on BT Sport. The next round will be played in the week commencing 10 March.
