Ole's team news update ahead of Newcastle visit

Friday 19 February 2021 13:30

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will have a clearer picture of his options on Saturday, ahead of the weekend clash with Newcastle United.

The Reds flew back from Italy late on Thursday night after the 4-0 win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League and must now prepare for the match against Steve Bruce's Magpies on Sunday, with a 19:00 GMT kick-off at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba and Phil Jones are definitely still out but there are others who need to be assessed at the Aon Training Complex.

Donny van de Beek and  Edinson Cavani did not make the trip to Turin but may be available for Sunday, while Scott McTominay appeared to be struggling with a problem when being replaced on the hour-mark on Thursday.

“We think, or hope, both of them [Donny and Edinson will be fit] but we’re not sure," Ole told Stewart Gardner. "Maybe one, maybe two, maybe none. It’s one of those tight ones where you’ve got to make a call, probably after training on Saturday.”

In his press conference, the manager added: "Of course, Paul is out and Phil is out. I don’t know how Scott is. I don’t know how Donny and Edinson will be either. They’ve got a chance, I think, so we’ve just got to give them until before training on Saturday as we need to pick a team on Saturday. We’ll see how they are and hopefully they can both be available."

Ole was also asked if Dean Henderson has a chance of starting in goal ahead of David De Gea.

"Of course Dean is in with a shout," he replied. "We pick a team on Saturday and Dean was very solid, good kicking and he could or should have had an assist for Marcus, which is another thing we worked on. He was clean in his handling, clean in his short passes and it was a good performance.

“He is maturing all the time but I have a very, very good goalkeeper in David. He saved us against West Brom so I can’t say to you now. I always speak to the players first before I say who’s playing and they will know."

NEWCASTLE'S TEAM NEWS

Former Reds skipper Bruce has confirmed Karl Darlow remains his first choice between the posts. "Martin Dubravka has been very professional but that doesn't mean he's happy and I wouldn't expect him to be," said the Magpies manager. "I've stayed with Karl because I think he deserves it."

There are a few issues for the visitors to contend with but Bruce explained: "Thankfully, we've not got any new injuries ahead of the weekend. Federico Fernandez trained yesterday and the day before but Sunday will be too soon for him.

“Fabian Schar has had his operation and Callum Wilson's is a muscle injury so we have to be patient with him. The one that looks better is Javier Manquillo. He twisted his ankle badly but has responded well to his treatment.” Jeff Hendrick returns from suspension.
