Ralf reveals team news for Atletico tie

Monday 14 March 2022 14:06

Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick has discussed his squad options for Tuesday night's Champions League round-of-16 clash with Atletico Madrid at Old Trafford.

Luke Shaw, Scott McTominay and Bruno Fernandes were all in training on Monday morning, providing a real boost heading into a difficult assignment against the reigning La Liga champions.

However, there is still some doubt around left-back Shaw's involvement on the night.

With the tie delicately balanced at 1-1, after Joao Felix's opener and Anthony Elanga's equaliser at the Wanda Metropolitano, things will be decided by extra-time or a penalty shoot-out if the sides cannot be separated with the away-goals rule no longer in operation.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the boss explained: "As it is right now, we have all the players available for the game tomorrow. There is a small question mark behind Luke Shaw.

"He has been training yesterday and today but we have to wait to see if he is fully fit to be available for the game.

"All the other players are back in training and ready for tomorrow."

On Fernandes, Rangnick added: "He tested negative [for Covid-19] yesterday and that's the reason why he could train today."

Shaw has recovered after suffering from Covid-19, while Fernandes and McTominay sat out the victory over Spurs on Saturday.

Edinson Cavani was back for the first time since the draw at Burnley last month and came on as a substitute, just before Cristiano Ronaldo's winner in the 3-2 triumph.

David De Gea played the full 90 minutes after producing a false-positive Covid-19 test and will look to take on his former club again, at the Theatre of Dreams.

ATLETICO'S TEAM NEWS

Atletico Madrid have already confirmed their 23-man squad to fly to Manchester, ahead of training on the Old Trafford pitch on Monday evening.

La Liga's current champions can count on captain Koke again, after he missed the first leg but played the first half of Friday's 2-1 win over Cadiz. Geoffrey Kondogbia and Mario Hermoso are in the party, despite missing the victory, and Stefan Savic is fit.

However, Sime Vrsaljko and Thomas Lemar are out through injury, joining Matheus Cunha, Daniel Wass and Yannick Carrasco (suspended) on the list of absentees.

There are key decisions for Diego Simeone to make up front, with Joao Felix and Angel Correa in good form, although Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez will be itching to play.
