Tuesday 27 October 2020 10:59

Edinson Cavani became the 20th player to be handed his Manchester United debut under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Chelsea.

And the Uruguayan centre-toward almost scored with his very first touch for the club.

Cavani became the second United debutant in a matter of days after Alex Telles introduced himself to our fans with a solid performance against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital.

Of course, 20 is the number Ole was famous for wearing during his playing days at Old Trafford so, from first to last, here is every player who has appeared for United for the first time under the boss...

Edinson Cavani was almost an instant Reds hero, and the boss is confident there's plenty to come.

2018/19: CHONG, GARNER, GREENWOOD

Solskjaer took over at Old Trafford, initially on a caretaker basis, in December 2018 and it did not take the Norwegian long to introduce Academy players to the first-team squad.

Tahith Chong, who’s now on loan at German side Werder Bremen, made his United debut against Reading in the Emirates FA Cup on 5 January 2019.

James Garner then came on for the Reds at the end of February, against Crystal Palace in the Premier League. The midfielder is on loan at Watford in the Championship this season.

The last debutant that season was none other than Mason Greenwood, and what a game to appear in! Like Telles, the teenager played his first match for the first-team in Paris, coming off the bench in that famous 3-1 UEFA Champions League round-of-16 win.

2019/20: 13 DEBUTANTS

In the following campaign, Ole’s first full season in charge, the manager further emphasised the importance of bringing through youth, while introducing his own signings.

In the season opener against Chelsea on 8 August, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James and Harry Maguire, who would go on to become United skipper after Ashley Young's departure in January, all made their club debuts. James even crowned it by scoring in front of the Stretford End, as United ran out 4-0 winners.

A few weeks later, Academy product Brandon Williams came on against Rochdale in the Carabao Cup and didn't look back - he made a total of 36 first-team appearances in his debut campaign.

For our away trip to Astana in the UEFA Europa League, Ole selected six new homegrown players, with Ethan Galbraith, Largie Ramazani, D'Mani Mellor, Dylan Levitt, Di'Shon Bernard and Ethan Laird all playing in the cold in Kazakhstan.

Teden Mengi's cameo appearance against LASK ensured the Reds match a 67-year-old club mark.

In January, as the transfer window came to an end, the Reds brought in Portuguese playmaker Bruno Fernandes and Nigerian striker Odion Ighalo to bolster the first-team.

Both of them made an instant impact. Fernandes proved vital to us finishing third in the Premier League. Ighalo also added his qualities to the team and was prolific in the cup competitions, scoring against Derby, Club Brugge, LASK and Norwich.

Our no. 18 played his first game for the club in a 0-0 draw to Wolves at home on 1st February, whereas Ighalo was subbed on in a crucial 2-0 win at Stamford Bridge 16 days later.

Teden Mengi became the last player to make his United debut in the 2019/20 season, as he played against LASK in the return leg of the Europa League, a game which Ole's men won 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes and Odion Ighalo both arrived at the club in January.

2020/21: VAN DE BEEK, HENDERSON, TELLES, CAVANI

Donny van de Beek was our first signing of the summer and he came off the bench to score a consolation goal as United lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace in the opening game of 2020/21.

Following his impressive loan spell at Sheffield United, Dean Henderson was handed his dream debut for the Reds a few days later, keeping a clean sheet and pulling off a wonderful save to secure a 3-0 win against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup.

Telles and Cavani added their names to the list last week - and hopefully there's more to come from the South American pair.

Facundo Pellistri signed on the same day as the two first-teamers and could be next in line to make his bow, after his impressive showing for the Under-23s on Friday.
