Ever-ready Tim pleased with United return

The versatile 22-year-old pitched his credentials for inclusion in the Reds' side for the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday with a composed performance at left-back, against the club he spent the 2017/18 season with.

Fosu-Mensah hadn’t featured for United since May 2017, but was called upon in an unfamiliar left-back role at Selhurst Park, after Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams picked up injuries during the 2-2 draw with Southampton on Monday.

The Netherlands international was delighted to have made his comeback, and admitted he'd worked hard to find his way back into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans after suffering a knee issue while on-loan at Fulham last season.

“It feels good. I’m happy to play for the club again, but I’m more happy that we got the win today,” he told MUTV after the Selhurst Park victory. “It was hard, it was hard. But that’s what you work such a long time for, all these months, for moments like this.

“This is football and anything can happen so you have to be ready, especially at a club like this. You have to be ready and I was ready for this moment.

“It was quite special (being back at Selhurst). Every time I step on this pitch it’s a special feeling because I had a nice season here, with some great people so it’s special.”

Tim can play across the backline, but in his 22 appearances for the Reds in 2016 and 2017, we became used to seeing him deployed as a right-back, or in a central midfield role.

Fosu-Mensah actually played on the left when making his bow for the Reds, and hinted that he's happy to feature wherever he may be required.

“Comfortable is a big word but I’ve played there before, I think I made my debut against Arsenal and came on as a left-back.

“I’ve not played there for a long time but I can play lots of positions.”

Now Fosu-Mensah is gearing up for a big finish to the campaign in the Premier League after United drew level again with Leicester City in the race for the top four with victory at Palace.

Chelsea are also in the mix, a point ahead of us and the Foxes in the three-way fight for the remaining two Champions League positions. 

The Reds play West Ham at Old Trafford next Wednesday, after the FA Cup semi-final on Sunday, and there is also a blockbuster final-day showdown with Leicester at the King Power Stadium on the cards.

“We know that if we win every game left this season we are in the Champions League next season so that’s the focus,” added Tim. “We have to keep going, keep going and keep going. Definitely.”
