United Briefing: Ole’s view on international players
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shared his thoughts on whether Manchester United players from ‘red-list’ countries will be able to meet up with their respective national squads in the coming weeks.
Thirty-three countries have been included in the UK Government’s ‘COVID-19 red-list travel ban’, meaning that anyone who travels to those nations must quarantine in an approved hotel for 10 days upon returning to the UK.
That could have a big impact on Alex Telles, Fred, Bruno Fernandes and Edinson Cavani, with Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay all named as red-list countries.
With a two-week international break set to begin from the week commencing 22 March, Ole was asked in Wednesday’s post-match press conference whether United’s players are likely to be travelling in that period.

“We’ve not sat down and made a proper call on that one, but it doesn’t make sense if you lose your player for 10 days’ isolation, of course it doesn’t,” Ole told reporters via video, following our 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.
“We’re the ones paying the players and from what I understand that’s the rule. FIFA have given us the rule that they don’t have to be released. So I would think that’s going to be a hard call to make, to let them go and play in red-list countries.”
Brazil, Portugal and Uruguay all face World Cup qualifiers later this month, and details currently remain scarce on what impact a lack of Premier League players could have on such fixtures.

United suffered a disappointing night as we drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday.
The Reds had plenty of bright moments in the first period at Selhurst Park but failed to find a way past the Eagles defence, with Vicente Guaita producing a superb stop to deny Nemanja Matic’s strike from distance.
But in the second period, United failed to push on and grab the winner, and could have returned home empty handed if it weren’t for an outstanding save from Dean Henderson late on to deny Patrick van Aanholt.
David De Gea and Anthony Martial both missed the match, and Ole provided an update on their respective situations when he spoke to club media ahead of the game.
