Why Lindelof missed the Chelsea match

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Victor Lindelof missed Manchester United’s Premier League clash with Chelsea due to illness.

Prior to our trip to Stamford Bridge, the Swedish defender had played in all bar two league games this season: the away trip to Newcastle United in October and the home encounter with Burnley last month.

In his place, Ole selected Eric Bailly from the start against Chelsea, giving the Ivorian centre-back his first appearance of the campaign.

Speaking to MUTV before the game, Ole said: “Victor has fallen ill. Eric has been champing at the bit recently.

“He’s played a couple of behind-closed-door games with the Reserves. He’s ready; hopefully he’ll get a good night.”

Bailly was expected to line up as part of a three-man defence, alongside Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw.
Had Lindelof featured against Chelsea it would have been his 100th game for the Reds. However, should he be fit to travel to Belgium during the week, the 25-year-old could reach his century of appearances in our UEFA Europa League game against Club Brugge on Thursday.
