Manchester United line up before the Valencia match

Who can the Reds face next in the Champions League?

Wednesday 12 December 2018 22:02

Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Valencia on Wednesday evening means the Reds finish second in Group H of the Champions League.

United headed into the game knowing a place in the round of 16 was already secured after picking up 10 points from the first five games in the group.

An away win in Spain would have meant the Reds topped the table, with Juventus losing 2-1 to Young Boys, but the defeat confirmed our runners-up spot and means we will face a side who finished first in another pool.

The Reds are made to settle for second spot in Champions League Group H after defeat in Spain.

With the group stage now wrapped up, we know which sides the Reds can be paired with in Monday’s last-16 draw, which takes place in Nyon, Switzerland at 11:00 GMT.

United can face six of the eight teams who finished first in their respective groups. At this stage in the tournament clubs from the same country cannot be drawn together, so we will not be paired with Manchester City. We cannot face Juventus either, as they also qualified through Group H.

WHO CAN WE FACE?

Borussia Dortmund - The current Bundesliga leaders topped a tough group including Atletico Madrid, and picked up 13 points from their six games.

Barcelona -
We haven’t met the Catalan side in a competitive game since the 2011 Champions League final. We also played them in the 2009 final and 2008 semi-finals.

Paris Saint-Germain -
Surprisingly, we have never faced PSG in a competitive European game. The Ligue 1 outfit won a challenging group ahead of Liverpool, with Napoli dropping into the Europa League.

Porto -
Jose Mourinho won Europe’s elite competition with the Portuguese club in 2004. We have played Porto eight times over the years, including the 2009 quarter-final which the Reds won 3-2 on aggregate.

Bayern Munich -
Our famous opponents in the 1999 Champions League final reached the last 16 of this year's competition as group winners, after drawing 3-3 with Ajax on Wednesday night.

Real Madrid -
The most successful side in European Cup history and the current holders of the trophy. We last played Los Blancos in last year’s UEFA Super Cup final in Macedonia.
