Who was United's Man of the Match against Fulham?

Sunday 13 November 2022 19:56

Manchester United struck late at Craven Cottage on Sunday, sealing a vital 2-1 win in our last Premier League fixture before the season breaks for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Erik ten Hag's side faced a competitive Fulham side, and were pegged back in the second half, but Alejandro Garnacho’s goal deep into added-time ensured that the Reds took all three points back to Manchester.

Christian Eriksen had given United the lead during the first 45, when he swept home Bruno Fernandes’s low cross for his first goal for the Reds since arriving in the summer.

And after former Red Dan James equalised for the hosts just after the hour mark, Garnacho was on hand to settle the match after coming off the bench.

A number of our players played their part in the important win, but who claimed our Man of the Match crown?

Unsurprisingly, the overwhelming winner of our fan poll was 18-year-old Garnacho, who replaced Anthony Martial after 73 minutes and fired home United’s winner – his first goal in the Premier League.

The Argentinian winger looked lively after joining the action and had a penalty shout waved away before slotting his decisive effort beyond Bernd Leno to prompt jubilant celebrations from our travelling supporters.

Garnacho claimed a strong 49 per cent of our vote, with Christian Eriksen – who got a goal and an assist – coming closest with 31 per cent.

Eriksen once again partnered Casemiro at the heart of our midfield and, as always, looked composed on the ball throughout.

Christian opened the scoring in the first half when he arrived late at the back post to slide home Fernandes’s low cross. He also had a similar opportunity on the stroke of half-time, but fired just wide on that occasion.

The Dane was also the provider for Garnacho’s winner, weighting his pass perfectly to allow the exciting youngster to stride onto it and finish with ease.

Christian was delighted with the win, but says we should have killed the match a lot earlier...

Only one other Red got into double figures in our poll: David De Gea.

The Spaniard was called into action on a number of occasions, preserving United’s one-goal lead in the first period and also ensuring the score stayed the same during later periods of Fulham pressure.

One save in particular stood out from De Gea’s catalogue against Fulham: a superb reaction stop to deny the hosts’ centre-back Tim Ream from close range.

Erik praises Garnacho and Eriksen, and loves the way we stayed composed in the build-up to our winner...

David played a key role in United’s win at Craven Cottage, of that there is no doubt. The Spaniard accumulated 11 per cent of our vote, which was more than deserved.

But Garnacho’s goal sealed the three points for the Reds and earned him our Man of the Match award, enabling United to go into the World Cup break in buoyant mood.

Congratulations, Alejandro!
