BRIGHTON 3 UNITED 2
The Reds suffered a disappointing defeat at the Amex Stadium on Sunday afternoon, in the second match of the Premier League season. Chris Hughton’s Seagulls led 3-1 at half-time thanks to goals from Glenn Murray, Shane Duffy and Pascal Gross, with Romelu Lukaku also netting. Paul Pogba then scored a 95th-minute penalty to offer some hope, but the hosts held on to secure their win.

Jose Mourinho provided a frank analysis in the wake of the defeat to Brighton...

HOW MOURINHO REACTED
“We were punished by every mistake we made and I think the third goal is too hard for the team,” summarised Jose. “We tried at half-time and the team tried in the second half, but from the mental point of view the accumulation of the mistakes and the punishing of those mistakes with goals gave happiness and confidence to a good team like Brighton. They took that confidence from us.”

POGBA FRONTED UP
As the team’s captain, Paul spoke to the media afterwards and did not hold back in his assessment of the performance. “We always play for the shirt and for the fans,” the Frenchman explained. “The result is not what we or the fans wanted. The fans should be mad - we are. Today was a bad performance from all of us and we have to wake up for the next game.”

WHY ALEXIS MISSED THE MATCH
Sanchez did not feature at Brighton due to injury and the manager is waiting to discover the severity of the problem. “I don’t know really,” Mourinho explained to the media. “Let’s wait for the results of the studies, but I don’t think it’s a big thing. I think it will be one or two weeks maximum.”

TWO PLAYERS RETURNED TO ACTION
Ashley Young made his first appearance since the World Cup in Russia by starting at right-back and he was soon joined by his England team-mate Jesse Lingard, who stepped off the bench at half-time.
Congratulations to the Manchester United Women's team on earning a first competitive win.

MU WOMEN MADE HISTORY
Our newly-formed team played a first competitive match, against historic rivals Liverpool at Prenton Park. It ended with a celebrated 1-0 victory in the FA Women’s Continental Tyres League Cup, thanks to a late Lizzie Arnot goal.

“I’m really pleased with the three points but at the same time we know we can play better,” said boss Casey Stoney. “These girls have put an absolute shift in for six weeks after being thrown together. To go out there and dig deep, to show a bit of character was really pleasing.”

DE GEA LOOKS SET TO SIGN
“He is a Manchester United player and he will as soon as possible sign a new contract,” Jose said of David. “He likes it here, we love him. We want him to stay, he wants to stay, so when a player is not on the market the value is zero.”
TWO WINS FOR THE ACADEMY
Ricky Sbragia's Under-23s earned an encouraging 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Friday thanks to goals from DJ Buffonge, Angel Gomes and Nishan Burkart. Then, on Saturday, Neil Ryan's Under-18s beat Liverpool 3-1 at Kirkby, where Di'Shon Bernard, Mason Greenwood and James Garner all netted.

FOUR LOAN STARLETS IN ACTION
Tim Fosu-Mensah made his debut for Fulham as a starter in their 3-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur, and fellow defender Axel Tuanzebe played for 64 minutes in Aston Villa's 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town. Dean Henderson started a fourth game for Sheffield United in their 2-1 win over Norwich City, while Matty Willock played a full game as St Mirren lost 4-0 at Aberdeen, for whom James Wilson was not involved. Joel Pereira and Kieran O’Hara didn’t play for Vitoria Setubal or Macclesfield.
