Biography

A prodigious youth talent who made his first-team debut back in 2017.

It was an indication of his potential, he is even young for his age group and was born on the deadline to be involved in the 2016/17 FA Youth Cup. An outstanding performer at lower age levels, he earned the Premier Cup's Most Valuable Player award in 2015 despite the Reds failing to reach the latter stages of the competition.Gomes is comfortable and assured in possession and has a wide passing range, while also providing a goal threat from a no.10 role. His maiden strike for the Under-18 at Derby County was a pearler and his tally of three goals in 10 starts, with seven further appearances off the bench, included a dramatic winner at Norwich City. There were more positive signs at the start of the 2016/17 season as he pulled the strings in a no.10 role and supplied goals and assists aplenty for the youth team, including rising to score a header against West Brom to show add another string to his bow. He even claimed a hat-trick before his 16th birthday away to Everton. His fine work with England also continued as he skippered the Under-17s to an outstanding triumph in the Croatia Cup, winning all three games including an 8-1 demolition of Germany. He would go on to be part of that squad’s success in the World Cup.He became the youngest-ever recipient of the Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award and, three days later, the 16-year-old became the youngest player since Duncan Edwards to appear for United's first team, when he came off the bench late in the final-day win over Crystal Palace. It was recognition of the limitless potential of the youngster, who was joint-top scorer in the Under-18s with 12 goals but, remarkably, had still to break into the Reserves when Jose Mourinho replaced skipper Wayne Rooney with the prodigy at Old Trafford last May. The appearance also ensured Gomes was the first person born in this Millennium to play in the Premier League. The midfielder played mainly for the Reserves in 2017/18, but continued to impress during his rare appearances for the Under-18 side, scoring five goals in just seven games. He was introduced as a late substitute for the senior side during their FA Cup clash against Yeovil in January 2018 and everybody will hope to see him in first-team squads more regularly in the coming years.Injuries may have hampered his progress somewhat but he featured in the national final of the Under-18 league against Chelsea and looked to push on again in 2018/19.A regular in the UEFA Youth League team and Under-23s, often taking on the armband, and adapted well to the rigours of Premier League 2 football. He finished the campaign strongly and got a taste of first-team action as a late substitute against Huddersfield Town in the win on Boxing Day 2018.Certainly, his displays against Newcastle United, at St James' Park, and in the final Under-23s fixture versus Wolves, showed what he is capable of - dictating the play from midfield, showing confidence and quick feet and providing killer passes. In recognition of his progress, he was on Tour 2019 and bagged his first senior goal, the winner in a 2-1 triumph against Tottenham, in Shanghai. He captained Neil Wood's Under-21s to a victory in our first-ever EFL Trophy game, at Rotherham United, and is maturing nicely.
