Thompson had already been on the bench for Kieran McKenna's side as a schoolboy, being named as a substitute for the first time for the win over Norwich in April. He hails from Warrington, the same town in the North-West that produced first-team star Jesse Lingard, and was a regular in the squad - being named on the bench 18 times as McKenna's team won the Premier League North. With Matej Kovar and Alex Fojticek moving up to the Under-23s, this could be his time to shine.
