A proven scorer in some of Europe's top leagues, Wout Weghorst joined Manchester United on loan from Burnley during the January 2023 transfer window.
The tall forward arrived at Old Trafford with goal tallies to his name in the Eredivisie, the Bundesliga and the Turkish Super Lig, where he played for Besiktas in the first half of the 2022/23 season. Weghorst has also netted on the international stage for the Netherlands, most notably in the 2022 World Cup when his late double for the Oranje forced extra-time in their quarter-final clash with the eventual tournament winners Argentina. Wout made his professional debut in August 2012, with Dutch second-tier club Emmen. His performances for them earned him a move to Eredivisie side Heracles, where his second season culminated in European qualification. In July 2016, he joined AZ Alkmaar and was impressive enough during his two years there to be called up for the senior Netherlands squad in March 2018. He made his international debut that month, coming on as a substitute for the final few minutes of a friendly defeat to England in Amsterdam. Weghorst was snapped up by German side VfL Wolfsburg in July 2018 and his prolific scoring continued there with 70 goals in 144 appearances. This caught the eye of suitors across Europe. After four successful years in Germany, Wout arrived in the Premier League in January 2022 when he joined Burnley. Although the Clarets had a difficult campaign and were relegated, the Dutchman got off the mark in English football's top flight with strikes against Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United. In July 2022, Weghorst joined Besiktas on what was meant to be a season-long loan. It was proving to be a successful spell, as the forward scored nine goals in 18 games. However, when United showed interest in him during the winter transfer window, his temporary contract in Turkey was terminated and he moved from parent club Burnley to Old Trafford on 13 January 2023, bolstering Erik ten Hag's attacking options for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
