Andreas exclusive: What Belgium means to me
Andreas Pereira grew up in Belgium, watching his dad play professionally, so he has a deep connection to the nation...
How much did that win on Monday boost confidence? “I think it is important. Chelsea is a very good team, we prepared very well for them during the break and it was very satisfying that we got the three points, but now it is over, we have to look forward now and focus on this game.” How are our two new signings settling in? “They are good guys. Bruno is a very good guy, he is always laughing about the building. Ighalo just came in with the lads. They are very easy-going guys, who are working hard and are humble. That is what we need.” You were born in Belgium and were here as a young lad, so what does this country mean to you? “Belgium is very important for me. I am very grateful for Belgium and everything it did for me and my family. Still today, I have a lot of friends here in Belgium and I still have the connection with Belgium.” Did you play for some teams here? “Yeah my dad played here professionally and I used to play here for some teams that he used to play for, we used to go together. In the end I played for PSV and that is when I came to United.” And now of course, because your parents are Brazilians, you wear that Brazil shirt with pride… “Yeah, it was a difficult decision for me but in the end my heart and my family is Brazilian. I feel more Brazilian on that side.” Any friends coming to this game? “I have a few friends coming to the game and I cannot wait to get the game going, to play in Belgium again.” What are your thoughts on this Club Brugge team? “They are a good team, they are first in the league, they played very good games against Real Madrid and PSG, so we have to be up for it, we have to prepare for it, of course that is what we have done and we have come here to win.” The competition is getting serious now in the knockout stages, isn’t it? “Yeah it is getting serious and of course we have to be serious about it. It is a chance to win it and we have to go for it.” This is a chance to win a trophy and earn Champions League qualification, which is huge… “It is massive. It is another trophy that is possible to win and that is what we want. We are at Manchester United to win trophies and we want to end in the top four, to get Champions League, but we want to win the Europa League as well.” Is this the time in the season that you enjoy the most? “This is the time we most enjoy, the time for a player at United when you have to step up. It is the right time for us. We trained very well during the break and we are prepared for this.”
