Gomes enjoys new role in win over Perth Glory
Angel Gomes tells us about his different role in our first pre-season game and Academy pal James Garner's non-celebration...
Q: Was it a case of the scoreline making it a lot closer than it actually was because you dominated that one, didn’t you? Angel: “Yeah, it was good to get out there obviously. We’ve been training for a good two weeks now and, yeah, everything that you’ve seen in the game is what we’ve been practising on the pitch, working hard, trying to get the front-foot press and trying to create and score as many goals as possible.” Q: You seemed to be really pressing high and trying to dispossess them high up the field. Was that part of the plan and something you’ve been working on? Angel: “Yeah, of course. We’ve got very quick, direct and pacy players and we tried to press, stay high, get everyone locked up. We did that so we could create more chances, win the ball up higher and try to dominate the game.” Q: We saw new signing Daniel James play in the first half? He’s clearly going to be a threat, isn’t he? Angel: “Yeah, of course! As you’ve seen, he’s got a lot of pace. As well as his pace, he’s smart as well – he knows when to go one v one and he’s a very good lad as well. He’s got on well with the boys and we’re happy to be here.” Q: You played in the second half. You’re not really a winger – we’ve seen you play more centrally in the Academy. You seemed to enjoy it out there? Angel: “Yeah, of course. Anywhere on the pitch, I don’t mind playing – as long as it’s for the club. Yeah, I enjoyed playing out on the left, I get to come in, I get to rotate with Juan [Mata] and players like that so I enjoy playing out wide.” Q: Goals are obviously important for strikers and what an instinctive finish it was from Marcus for 1-0? Angel: “Yeah, it was typical Marcus. He’s lethal anywhere around the box and he took his chance on today. I’m happy for him to get the goal.” Q: And your pal Jimmy Garner comes off the bench and smashes one in from 20 yards… Angel: “Yeah, of course! We were speaking about it before the game, what we will do if we score – any of us, the younger lads. Obviously, his celebration – he didn’t go off and celebrate. I told him to celebrate! No, he’s very happy and all of the lads are buzzing for him.” Q: I guess it will mean a lot to him. We’ve seen him coming through the ranks. He’s not really a renowned goalscorer but it was a heck of a strike… Angel: “Yeah, of course. We got on to him about scoring more from outside the box, so we won’t hear the end of it now so I’m happy for him.” Q: So we’ve got Leeds here again in four days’ time. Is that us now off and running? Angel: “Yeah, I’d like to think so. Everyone is feeling good, everyone is firing so I’m just looking forward to each game that goes on now.”
