Axel scored his first senior goal on Thursday night, only to see it ruled out. Here's his take...

Gutted to have first United goal ruled out?

“It is something you dream about as a little boy and you’d love the Stretford End to be full but it wasn’t but it was still a special moment. It was just a shame it was ruled out. I had no idea (why it was ruled out). But the referee has to do his job and that is not something we get involved in, you just respect the decision and get on with it.”

Midfield role. Something you might have to play going forward?

“Yes, I can play several positions My preferred role is centre-back but if the manager wants me to play to do a job for the team, I will do a job because we want to win trophies this season and if I have to fill in in a certain spot then I will do so.”

Difficult to get intensity in a game when you are ahead from the first leg?

“Not so much. The mentality and the competition in the team is very high and everyone is fighting for spots. We have a big game at the weekend against Chelsea so everyone wants to demonstrate their individual abilities to get into that starting XI."

Didn’t concede over two legs?

“If there is one thing we strive for, it's not conceding goals. As much as we like scoring them we want to keep the other end shut. We look forward. We definitely want to be a more competitive team. More solid and we demonstrated that tonight and we want to do that for the rest of the season."

Nice for Amad and Shola?

“They are growing. They are good young players with a lot to learn and this is the best way for them to learn to be checked on. Obviously in this game we were in an advantageous position but It is a learning curve, exposure, a foreign team, foreign referees, it is a lot of experiences coming into one and I am sure with the coaching staff here and the players around they will grow to become good first-team players.

“We want to win the competition. We are in it to compete. What is the point in being in it to just play in it? We want to win. It was disappointing to get knocked out of the Champions League so this is the second-best thing.”
