Bruno: We can do much better
TranscriptFernandes talks us through the penalty drama against West Brom, and tells us what United must improve...
Bruno, in the end, was it all about the win today? “Yes, of course. It was a tough game. They played really good football; they are tough in the back; they are strong. I think we can do much better in the final third – the last pass, shooting. We need to do much better. I think everyone feels the same. The performance was good, but I think we can do much better and everyone agrees with this.” You were involved with some big incidents. First of all, the penalty that was given to West Brom. What was your view of that? “I felt I touched the ball. I know I touched the player, but I feel first of everything that I touched the all. I think it was between his legs, when he controls the ball, [that] I touch. After, of course, I have a contact with him, but I think it was a normal contact. But I haven’t seen the image [video] so I cannot really say much more on this.” And then the penalty you took at the other end. Obviously Sam made the save, but was it clear to you that he was quite a long way off his line? “No, and it doesn’t matter. If he comes out of his line or not, for me, it doesn’t matter: I have to score. I have to have one chance and put the ball in. I take the second chance and I’m not happy, at all, because you can’t have two chances maybe sometimes. Today you have, but maybe other times you will not have this kind of situation. But this happens against us in the home game against Crystal Palace when David [De Gea] saved, and after they score. So I think the rules are there. I don’t know if he comes off his line or not, but I have to score from the first one.” Is it mentally tough to have to wait to take the penalty again? I think you had to wait in Paris and scored. Is it quite mentally tough to have to wait and take it again? “No, I think it comes from inside of you when you’ve missed the penalty. It gives you the motivation to go and do better than before, and you do it. Today, we know it was a tough game and we have a clear chance to score, and I have to score to help my team-mates and my team to the three points. Because we need the three points in the league, and the most important thing in the league is about the three points.” Was it a little bit nervy not getting that second goal? Because West Brom are always in the game at that point… “I think we have some chances. Also, if we score in the first half maybe the game can be much easier, because maybe they open [up] a little bit more the game for us. But we have chances to score and I think, like I said before, everyone agrees we can do much more. [The] performance was good, but I think we can have better performances than this. We show already that we have more qualities than we showed today.” Now we’ve got the win, can we build from this? People don’t have to talk about the home record anymore? “No, I don’t think we have to build from here. We are building from the beginning, you know? You build from the losses also. Of course, you don’t want to lose; a team like this, a club like this, doesn’t need to lose to build something important. But it’s there. We did the mistakes, and now the point is to keep going and doing the right things and, most important, take the three points.”
