Van de Beek: We played too slowly
Our new Dutchman was an immediate hit against Palace, but admitted our performance was way below par...
Donny, a debut goal for you but, clearly, not the result we wanted... "No. My first day for the club and a day you want to win, and it doesn't matter how you win, and I'm really disappointed that we lose 3-1 at home. It's really bad." Did you see there that a lot of the players hadn't really had a full pre-season? The sharpness and the match-sharpness wasn't there today? "Yeah, but last week in training we did really well. We did really good, so my feeling was very positive, but yeah, today we played too slowly, we were too long with the ball, and I think against an opponent like Crystal Palace you need to speed up the game to create something. That was not good enough." When you did score, did you still feel there was something in the game for us? "Yeah, because after we got the ball, and they were scared. But then after some minutes they made [the] 3-1, and it was not what we wanted." From a players' point of view, is it frustrating when you see the VAR rules? I don't think anybody thinks Victor Lindelof tried to handle that by any means? "Yeah, you are really David is taking the ball really nice [to save] but then they have to take it again. So disappointing." If you scored that goal in front of the Stretford End with 40,000 people screaming, it would have been incredible. It must have been strange to score and it be silent? "Yeah, to play for the fans in stadiums like this, it's more nice. But still I scored, but we lose and it's just the most important that we have to win." It's going to be a relentless fixture schedule. There's no time to do anything but play the next game. But are you glad there's another game coming quickly? "Yeah. Next week we need to step up and we need to win. For our feeling. We need to step up now." And just for you, coming on wearing that red shirt for the first time at Old Trafford - what did that feel like and what did that mean to you? "Yeah, we lose, but it's always really nice to play for a club like this. I made my first game and I hope to help the team and next time that we win, for sure."
