Fans in optimistic mood after beating Chelsea
Our man Sam Carney has been speaking to Reds, sampling the mood and hearing which players impressed on Sunday...
Q: What do you think of the performance yesterday? Supporter 1: Yeah, I was delighted with the performance yesterday. I thought they played alright, they played very good. First half was pretty nervy, with Chelsea hitting the post and obviously the woodwork twice but I thought they just came out and really it was a great performance, wasn’t it? Supporter 2: There were some moments where I thought, oh God. Like when he hit the post and the crossbar – was it Abraham? Yeah. That part, I thought... first half was a bit ropey but I think nerves played a big part in that. I was really happy. I was really happy with the result because my friend’s a Chelsea fan and we beat them. It’s always good to beat the Blues. Supporter 3: It was a brilliant game. I’ve been watching the pre-season games as well and we’ve been performing well. Goals, even the defence has become stronger. You could see that yesterday. Maguire and Wan-Bissaka were holding our defence and Wan-Bissaka was even going forward. And attacking... well, 4-0: it was a really good game! Supporter 4: Yeah, I felt like it was really good to be fair. The team came out and let’s not get too over the top about it but at the end of the day, it’s the first game of the season: beat Chelsea, three points, four goals. Q: Who were the standout players for you? Supporter 1: I thought the guys at the back were brilliant. Wan-Bissaka was brilliant, Harry Maguire obviously. Lindelof looked brilliant beside him and Shaw done his job too. McTominay done very well and I was very impressed with Pereira as well. Then obviously Rashford and Martial were just super. Supporter 4: Yeah, I think Maguire [was] absolute world-class, to be fair. From the back, from off it just looked like he controlled the whole game, he just looked very comfortable on the ball. He reminded me of Rio Ferdinand a little bit, he’s just a good reader of the game. Wan-Bissaka, that guy just gets his legs anywhere, doesn’t he? You know what he’s like. He just seemed confident, he needs to improve a bit more going up but from a defensive point of view he seems to get around. And then obviously Daniel James. That would be my dream to come on and score on my debut and credit to him, he looks absolutely rapid and I’m sure he’s going to be a world-class player at some point. Supporter 2: Wan-Bissaka. Excellent buy, I reckon he was a fantastic investment. Maguire, I think he made the team really calm. Presence, really good signing, brilliant signing. Supporter 1: I was delighted with Dan James getting his goal. He really deserved it, didn’t he? It’s a dream debut for him. He looked good when he came on. I thought he’d missed the opportunity when he didn’t take it first time but obviously just delighted for him. Q: What are your hopes for the rest of the season? How do you think we’ll do? Supporter 3: Well, the competition is really stiff. City, Liverpool, Chelsea as well, they’re all really strong but I think we’re there, you know. We have a couple of loose ends where if we improve we’ll do really well. Our defence is well stronger now. Maybe a couple of attacking signings and I think minimum top four. Who knows, we might just win the league. Supporter 4: I’m not getting too over the top. I think I’ll take a top four finish. I think any progress on last season’s good. Let’s see when the transfer window [in Europe] closes, if we get to keep hold of some players. Supporter 1: Yeah, well it’s early days yet but I’m optimistic about it anyway. I feel like if they keep their mentality going and they keep going this year they’ll be in for a shout, yeah. Might not have to worry about reaching top four. Could be up there for top three teams, hopefully. I’m optimistic, yeah. Just hopefully they keep building from this year, keep moving and just build from this. A young team and just keep building experience for the young players. Seen a stat earlier that we had the youngest team in the Premier League this week. It’s just the United way isn’t it, it’s brilliant to have.
