Exclusive: Maguire is prepared for Partizan
“Every competition we enter we try and win - that is the bottom line of this club," says Maguire in our exclusive...
Harry this will be your first taste of European football with United. Are you looking forward to it? “Yeah, definitely! Like you say, I have been on the bench for the last couple of games so it will be nice to be out there, taste some action and get to feel what it is like to play in Europe.” Do you relish a lively atmosphere like this? “Yeah it is something I am looking forward. When you come to places all over Europe, I have relished it like we do in England. You go to these grounds and you know it is going to be hostile. You don’t want to give them any momentum in the game because you know it will get the crowd up so we know we will have to work on that. But we know we have got to look at ourselves and if we perform like we did on Sunday then we should get a positive result.” Can an experience like this help the youngsters’ experience? “Yeah, definitely! It is going to be a massive part of their experience and their learning curve, in where they are wanting to go, to play and become regulars at this football club. It will be an atmosphere that they have probably not played in before, but the best thing we can do is go out, perform, keep the crowd quiet and give the away fans something to go and cheer about it,” For the likes of Ethan and Brandon, 18 and 19, it will be pretty special for them… “Yeah it will be a special night for them if they get on the pitch. It is something they are going to learn from, gain experience from and hopefully if they get on the pitch they can control the emotion. The game itself, if they perform to their level and ability then they can help the team to get a positive result.” We played with three at the back last weekend. Does that show we are adaptable? “Yes. Throughout the season I don’t think you stick to one formation. I think you need to adapt to the opposition sometimes or to players that we have available. We went to three at the weekend and we felt like it worked well. We are disappointed that we did not hold on for the win in the end but it was a much better performance from ourselves and hopefully we can continue that in the games coming up.” And you felt comfortable in that, right? “Yeah! As long as I am on the pitch then I am happy to be honest. I have played in the system quite a lot. I played it with Steve Bruce at Hull and of course I played it in the World Cup as well. It is a system I am used to and the boys adapted to it really well. I think they played it quite a bit last season as well. We can improve on it, we know that, so we will keep working hard and hopefully we can do that.” How important is the Europa League? “Every competition we enter we try and win. That is the bottom line of this club. We want to win trophies so we enter the Europa League and we want to win it. We did that a couple of years ago so hopefully we can do it again.” How much of a challenge are these four away games? “Yeah it is quite strange that you get four so close. It is going to be a challenge with lots of travelling, staying over in hotels. I am sure we will rotate the squad, that’s for the manager to decide, but we are ready.”
