Lingard and Laird remain positive
Hear from goalscorer Jesse Lingard and debutant Ethan Laird, following the final whistle at Astana Arena...
Q: Jesse not the result we wanted but is it the bigger picture that six players made their debuts? JL: Yeah, it’s huge for the youth of Man United. Man United have are all about brining the Academy products though and most of the debuts today, I think they enjoyed it. Q: We made the perfect start and you must be delighted to get back on the scoresheet? JL: It’s always good to get off the mark and it gives you a bit of confidence. We started off quick and we dominated the first half, but it’s that 30 second period in the second half where I thought we could have managed the game a bit better. Maybe one of the experienced lot, maybe me or Axel could have grabbed hold of the game. Things happen in football but it’s great for these lads. Q: How do you feel the young lads got on? JL: It’s not an easy place to come. Their tails were up, they had the fans backing them an and it was a hostile environment, but everyone kept their heads, everyone’s mentality was right. We help each other on the pitch and we stuck together. Q: Ethan, for you, what was it like to start tonight? EL: I was buzzing. When I got told I was like ‘right, ok’. Obviously it was a disappointing result but we learn from this and will come back better. Q: Did you feel at home straight away? EL: I mean, when you have the likes of Jesse with it always helps your confidence because you have your elders with you. We just got on the game. Q: It’s a shame for Di’Shon because he put in a great performance and there was nothing he could do about that when the cross cam over… EL: We learn from this, it’s just great we got the opportunity. Q: Jesse, it’s pretty much going to be a shootout with AZ in two weeks for top spot. It’s a prize worth having… JL: We’re Man United and we want to finish the top of group. We want to win every competition and we want to finish top of the table, that’s our main aim. Going into that game we can be confidence and make sure we get three points.
