Our post-match interview with Mourinho
"It was a spirited performance - everbody saw that - but the result is not the one we want," says Mourinho...
Q: Jose, a spirited performance. What did you make of it overall? JM: You are right. Everybody saw that, I saw that, you saw that, the fans saw that. Arsenal saw that and they were in trouble, but the result is not the result we want, but what can you say? Fantastic spirit, fantastic commitment, great intensity, great dynamic, happiness to give absolutely everything, people exhausted in the end of the game, lots of players in difficult circumstances. Diogo, the first start, Marcos Rojo, the first minute, Darmian after an injury, Eric Bailly after an injury. Chris Smalling, injured. Lots of players in difficult circumstances, but they managed a good performance. Of course with two goals is difficult to take, but the boys gave everything and everybody knows that." Q: Coming back twice from behind so quickly. When you got it back did you think you could go on and win it? JM: Yes, but then especially our defensive line died. They were really, really tired and when we need the team to push up, when we bring to the game powerful people, Lukaku, Fellaini, Pogba, when you bring them to the game is the moment when our defensive line stays back and can't close lines anymore. David De Gea with the ball the team needs to push up, the players were dead, exhausted. Eric Bailly couldn't even leave the box. Chris Smalling a little bit better, it was difficult for them, really, really difficult for them, but they managed to give everything and when people give everything, I cannot be critical, I can only be supportive. Q: A lot of energy and pace about the front three and high pressing. Was that something you were looking for? JM: Yes and we did that and we should score before them, but we concede that bad goal. Then we come to the game, then we score. Then we go to the second half when our best moment when we concede the second goal and then in the last period of the game where we put everything to go with everything people behind they just collapse and they try just to survive by the defensive point of view but they were not able to give more. So, very hard for them, but I can only be grateful, because they gave everything. Q: When you leave here tonight are you pleased or are you frustrated? Or is it a bit of both? JM: Both, but I prefer to be frustrated but happy that the players went to their limits than the opposite.
