Matic: Headers can be a strength
Serbian midfielder Nemanja explains how set-piece work paid dividends against his former club...
Q: How big a result could this be in the battle for the top four? NM: It’s very big. We knew if we lost here it was going to be a very big gap between Chelsea and us, but after these three points I am very confident we can catch that fourth spot. We are still in a race. We are there and, as you know, the Premier League is hard; Chelsea will drop points and we have to use that. We still have hard games to play, but I am very confident we can catch that. Q: It was the story of two great headers, one from Martial and then another from Harry… NM: Yeah, I think this is the first or second goal we scored in the league from a corner, so I’m happy. I’m happy because we worked a lot on that on the last few days. It’s a strength for the future, now that we can count on goals from headers. I’m happy with the team performance and we have to continue like this. Q: Bruno’s delivery for Harry’s header was great. Is that something you’ve been working on? NM: Yeah, in the last few days we were working on that, not corners especially, and I’m happy our work gets praised. Q: In the last year we’ve won here three times, that’s quite an achievement, isn’t it? NM: Chelsea at home is always hard, but we managed to deal with this pressure and we’ve won the last couple of games at this stadium. I hope we can continue like this. Q: Odion Ighalo made his debut and he very nearly scored… NM: I saw the ball already in the goal, but it was unluckily for him. I’m happy that he’s played already. He played well in the few minutes that he played. For sure, he will help the team until the end of the season. Q: Do you like VAR now? NM: I’m sure that VAR will help football to have good decisions. Today it helped us, but the next time it could help other teams, so I’m sure this is better for football.
