Matic: We have to create more
Nemanja pinpoints why United struggled to break down Crystal Palace…
What did you make of that performance and result tonight?
“I think that we have to do much better in these sorts of games, especially to create more opportunities, to risk more in their half, around their box. I think we defended well as a team, all 11 players. But in attack we need to do better. Crystal Palace were very solid at the back. Their midfield dropped in a bit so it was very difficult to break through. We have to give credit to them, but we know what we have to do. We know these are games we have to win. We need to take some positives; we didn’t concede a goal, we get a point. We have to be focused for the next match.”
You scored a spectacular goal here three years ago and you nearly did the same again – that was probably the closest we came actually…
“Yeah, three years ago I scored a nice goal, but to be honest, I forget that already. Next game is always a new challenge. In every new game we need to do better, me also. Everyone needs to look to the bigger picture to see where we can improve because we can improve for sure."
Goalscoring has not been a problem for us this season, apart from the last few games. How frustrating is that and is it hard to explain?
“It’s hard to explain. We have to be focused on the next game – you have, during the season, periods where you score lots of goals, you have some periods where you concede some goals. But you need to break that barrier in the next game, if it is possible. We have to be focused for the next one because everyone knows we have Manchester City to play. [It’s a] big game and big challenge for us and we want to get three points to see where we are.”
In a way is that a good game to have, to get us going a bit on Sunday?
“Yeah , of course. You always like to compete with the best teams. For sure, Man City is one of the best teams in the world. They play some good football, they have a good run of more than 20 games. We are happy in this moment we have to play them to see where we are, how much quality we have compared to them. In three days we are there and we will see.”
Confidence hasn’t taken a hit despite the fact the goals aren’t going in? You’re still confident going there on Sunday?
“I think that confidence… when you play for Man United that’s not a question. You have to go to every game with a confidence because you know that you represent one of the biggest teams in the world. That’s why we are here. We have quality on the pitch and we have to show that on the pitch.”
Dean [Henderson] had nothing to do until the very end, which I suppose is a sign of a good keeper?
“Yeah. I said before, we didn’t allow them to create a lot of chances, but when they created a chance he was fantastic. He showed that he has quality, he is a big character so well done to him.”
