Solskjaer: That was our best performance yet
Ole discusses a significant win, red-hot Rashford and marauding McTominay in a passionate post-match interview...
Ole, some victories feel bigger than others and that was a big one tonight… "Yeah, definitely. We’re not looking for proof but, of course, for the boys and the fans, it I great to see wins. I feel Villa and Sheffield United, when we were winning we should be seeing them out and tonight, after they got back into the game at 1-1, we managed to turn it into a win. It was great boost before Saturday." People were saying the first half an hour was up there with the best stuff we’ve played this season, would you agree? "I 100 per cent agree. It was excellent. We should have been three of four up and you’re unlucky when you go into half-time at 1-1. It was just about picking them up again and saying: ‘c’mon that’s the best performance you’ve put on’. Chelsea at parts, Liverpool at parts, but this was a mature performance. We kept the ball, we played through them, we played round them and in behind them. Marcus was absolutely outstanding, Scott was [as well]. I’m so pleased to have Scotty back in there again." You said before he only had a day or two of training, but you would never have thought that. He was straight in there. You wouldn’t have thought he hadn’t had a huge amount of preparation… "He had yesterday and that was it. That’s all he needs. He’s a fit boy and he looks after himself, he’s played every game and there was no chance I wasn’t going to push him though this game because we need him and he’s someone who doesn’t shirk responsibility - he wants to be in there, right in the thick of it. A great performance." Marcus is up to 12 goals now, this was a very mature performance. He looked so threatening throughout… "The best performance he’s had during the year I’ve been here. He was strong, direct, taking people on, inside and outside with no fear. That’s what we want - we want to see boys enjoying themselves. That’s what the Stretford End want to see. That’s what he’s been brought up on: seeing [Ryan] Giggsy or [Andrei] Kanchelskis - actually, maybe he’s too young for Kanchelskis - but that says everything about the boy and the potential. He’ll be excellent." What about the reception as you walked off the pitch. The fans clearly wanted to win, they wanted you to win. Did you feel that? "Of course I do. It’s humbling when you walk out or walk to the game and everyone is singing. I said it when I was a player, it’s the best feeling ever because you keep humming that little song in your head and you don’t get any fear. I feel no fear whatsoever here. I feel at home, I enjoy myself and I’m going o enjoy myself for as long as I can."
